Go with a 9" or 10" rail...or stick with a 7"?

I will soon be in the market for a rail for my 14.5" AR15. I am trying to figure out if I should go with a low profile gas block and a longer rail or just stick with a 7" set up. What would you do? I am thinking of going with either DD or Larue rails.

I'd stick with 7 if its what you already have.

Though lately I've really been starting to like the full length rail look where only the flash hider is sticking past the rails. I think a 14.5 is too long for that look, 11.5 is better.

I don 't understand the logic behind going to a lowgas block so that you can look cool with a rail mounted fip-up sight. This is not a "precision" rig with a hi-magnification telescopic sight. It is unlikely you are using the extra rail space for attaching IR pointer and illumination either.

Are you using it for work and you need the real estate to attach Lights and IR ad naseum to your weapon?

Ok, I am easily convinced. 7" looks like the way to go. No messin with the front sight and having to buy flip up front sights and stuff. I may just go with a Troy rail for now to fill the void untill I can get some Larue gear.

You won't be "settling" for a Troy rail. They are top quality! If starting a build off and you have access to either, I would suggest you will be well served with either one. I have built uppers with both systems and each has it's pros and cons.

Does anyone have any insight on the Samson MRFS-CX rail? Sort of the best of both worlds...

Samsons are basically cloned Troy's. Samson was originally making them for Troy as a subcontractor and he decided to put his own name on and violate their agreement. You are basically getting a Troy that way. Either way the product will work and be high quality most likely.

Depends what you want to do with the rifle -- admittedly one reason (hot barrel on the legs) is not really an issue in Canada with 5rd mags -- mind you with the new 10's -- some may start an IPSC rifle league up again...

I think the 12.0 looks pretty decent on the 14.5
