I'm getting prepared for my first mountain goat hunt in northern BC, and many folks have recommended the book "Hunt High" by Duncan Gilchrist, which is no longer in print.

So I'm looking to buy or borrow a copy. Please let me know if you have one sitting on your shelf gathering dust. I don't care about the condition.

Also, if there are any other "must read" books on the subject, I welcome your suggestions.

Thank for your help.

Check AbeBooks in the states. I just ordered one through them. I put an add here in the EE and got several books, including "high hunt". Reading it right now . Where's your hunt going to be?

A few more details. Guided/not guided? What area? Aside from a lot of information on getting ready for it, this is a must read. Use google for a few more mountain goat identification articles but this is a good start.

Sometimes finding any animal to harvest can be a challenge but being able tell the right one is a lot more difficult than most big game species.

I'm headed out of Black Lake on a guided hunt with Claw Mountain. I've read lots of material on Billy identification.
I have decent glass, 10x binocs and 10-45x60 spotting scope, enough?

If you're asking enough optics, I'd say that's plenty; If you're asking enough details, I think so. Success rates for guided goat hunts are usually very high everywhere in the province. I would suspect the main reasons for an unsuccessful hunt would be lack of physical preparation, lack of exposure equipment, or bad luck with the weather. The main advice I can offer for a goat hunt is work on your physical condition and use all of the equipment you plan on bringing before you go. Stupid things like a strap on a pack failing or a forgotten item can really screw up your hunt. I would check with the outfitter to see what gear they want you to bring. Usually one spotting scope is plenty for a hunting party and if the guide is bringing one, I'd stick with binoculars for frequent glassing. I think being well prepared for a few extremely physical days, trusting your guide, and making sure to do your part in glassing and combing over the terrain that they want you to will pay off. Everything else, all I can say is good boots, walking poles are really helpful, and all the really lightweight hiking gear that all the granola types like to use. Some goat hunts are easy, and some are downright grueling. I'll be going for goat in 6-9 this year. Good luck and have fun. Post up how it goes!

Well no luck finding a copy of Duncan Gilchrist's book Hunt High or Hunting the Rocky Mountain Goat. I've bought each now used off of Amazon.ca, but both deals fell through when the seller didn't actually have it in stock! Oh we'll, I'm off to 7-39 in the not to distant future, and really looking forward to it. Thanks to all the members who have provided advice & looked through their libraries.

I have guided for goat right next to that region in 6-18. Being in good shape is ideal but just being patient and taking your time is key!! So many get stressed being on the mountain don't... a good tent set up in a good place makes you purt near bullet proof and able to wait out bad weather or take your time climbing and do that ,take your time if you have too just know you'll be stuck in a tent a few days it is no big deal..
Good luck!
