In doing some family history a family member brought this picture back up. I knew it existed and had seen it before. My great grandfather is on the right and his brother on the left. A neighbour is in the middle. There are four mountain goats on the horses. I'm not sure of the year but will hopefully find some information on that. No scopes, no spotting scopes or binos and definitely no Sitka Gear.

 
Its nice to look at old hunting pictures.

It just proves that with a minimum amount of hunting gear these men went out to hunt and feed there families.

They didn't have scopes or rangefinders and the need to have Gortex from head to toe. They used a reliable hunting rifle and a lot of experience to get the job done.

Your Great Grandfather was one of those men. Something to be proud of.
 
Cool picture... I'm sure plenty of goats have been dropped by guys in Mackinaw jackets carrying Model 94 .30/30's... it worked back then and would work today, the goats haven't changed... but I wonder what they would have used back then if they had the options that we have today...

Very charming - the nostalgia and romanticism of a bygone era. With advancements in apparel technology, days in the field are much more comfy now for sure. And shots on game that they would have had to pass are now easily possible.

Besides the economy depends on new and improved products otherwise we wouldn't have anything to spend our money on. ;)

I've got an old photo around here somewhere of 3 goats down and the only rifle in the pic is a Remington pump.
 
Thanks for sharing the old family picture. I think it's worth remembering that if you were using a M94 30-30 in about 1910 or 1920 that the 30-30 was the high tech 'short mag' of its day. The 30-30 had only come out a decade or two before.

I like my new tech and comfort as much (or nearly as much) as the next guy, but if I had to giveup some of the modern tech/ luxuries and hunt only with an iron sighted 30-30 on foot/horseback wearing wool and leather, I sure as heck wouldn't give up hunting, far from it!! I wish I could hunt that way now... well the horses instead of ATV part. I still hunt a lot with iron sighted lever guns. I *just* got my first modern style plastic fantastic hunting rifle, a Tikka T3 lite 243. It's a sweet shooting and light weight little gun, I like it a lot too. :)

The old trapper Nelson Indian pack board is still the best hunting pack ever Sumtime Low tech is better
They weren't the most comfortable on a light pack but once you added 75 or 125 lbs of meat on it you would understand the difference and wy the trapper Nelson is still superior hunting pack
 
it s a shame i lost the pictures of my grand dad with his grizzly and the captured mauser he used just after war II in slovenija, because he looked like your ancester Chuck and it was at the end of the 40s ... those were the men ...
 
My grandparents are in their 70s and 80s now, but they never hunted. Some of their family did, but nobody close to me.

Stories like this make me kinda sad, because I don't have cool photos, stories, or old guns from yesteryear. My brother in law has my wifes's grandpa's 22, I should look into getting my hands on that before it ends up gone, I don't think anyone on that side of the family even has a license, and i am almost certain nobody uses it anymore...
 
That is a cool photo. My granddad didn't own a gun. My dad didn't take up hunting till I left home. I am glad I taught myself to hunt and butcher game.
 
Don't even get me started on goat hunting..........I never had it any easier than they did, in fact I never even had horses to pack out with. The only real advantage I had over them was a scope on my rifle.........but they had horses so it kinda evens out. When I was young and stupid enough to hunt goats, I had no money and no rangefinder and no high tech clothes and no high tech boots and no high tech tent, regular rubber rain gear which leaves you as cold and wet inside as it does on the outside. AAARRRRGGGGGHHHH....DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON GOAT HUNTING.............

I hear ya fbmi, except I'm addicted and can't shake the bug lol. Goat hunting has taken over my life.
