i use to look forward to it , but trespassers and idots ruined it for me :runaway:

man i really wish we still could hunt bear in the spring! it would be a nice little hunt to tie me over till the fall!

Sorry to hear about the trespassers. My Cousin owns a farm about 1 hour north of Toronto with a trout/salmon stream running through it. He has practically given up on keeping the trespassers out. It really is a shame. I visit him a couple of times a year & collect at least 2 or 3 large bags of garbage from the stream banks. He even went to the trouble of putting up a chainlink fence along the front of his property & the yahoo's just cut a hole in it. Too bad you can't shoot trespassers in Kanada.

I am getting excited about the upcoming Spring gobbler hunt. This will be my first turkey hunt in Ontario & I am signed up for the obligatory O.F.A.H turkey seminar in April. I bought a Mossberg 500 camo'd pump for the occasion. I was thinking about mounting a reddot scope on it. Anyone care to comment on the pros & cons. I'm driving my wife crazy with my call practicing  I hope the turkeys like it better.

I am very lucky to have an Uncle who owns a large farm in Ontario that has a healthy population of turkey's. It is mixed farmland & mature bush with plenty of water sources. He just sent me a picture of birds that came to scrounge around his bird feeder. Really got the blood pumping!

i used to want to do it when we visit the inlaws in manitoba, but then i was introduced to wood ticks:D

Yes, ticks are a nasty nusance especially when they carry deseases such as Lyme & Rocky mountain fever. I grew up in Texas & got used to the ticks. Spent some time recently in NJ where Lyme desease is spread by the deer ticks. Does make you worry a little, but won't keep me from enjoying the outdoor. How about West Nile virus? I never thought an African desease could survive the harsh Canadian Winter. Sure hope River Blindness never makes it over here.

This will be my 8th season for turkey and it's become a special time when I'll book vacation for it. I'll be gunning for my 13th and 14th birds .
Ticks don't usually bug me until the 2nd week of May , but using one of those lawn chairs that come in a bag really helps alot and stay away from low hanging , leafed branches. Make sure that a can of DeepWoodsOff is part of your kit.
Red dots and scopes will definately help . It's not hard to miss and it's rather dumbfounding when it happens .
Make sure you plan time to pattern your shotgun . This can be done with "elcheapo" ammo at first , then fire off a few turkey loads to be sure . Nearly all of the turkey I've nailed have been inside 25yd . One ( my furthest ) was taken at 52 steps out and another was under 10yd , so plan on different distances from a shooting postion that you'll likely be in .
Tresspassers can be more of a nusiance tho, especially when they're causing property damage . What have the police to say about them ?
2 seasons ago , I had a fella stalk up to my dekes , watched him for abit . Then I asked him " What the F are you doing ? ... are you F'n stoopid er what ? " Even through his face mask I seen a look of bewildered surprise ..lol. He quietly dissappeared ...looks like my calling works well on all kinds of turkey's ...lol

I'm looking forward to the season too! We're off to Kansas and Oklahmoa, as well as out local hunt, so it will be a great year for turkey adventures!

Three seasons ago I switched to traditional blackpowder only, and now I like my turkey "smoked"... flintlock style.;) Here's Tom#1 from last year...

Hey Timberlord,

Nice gobbler! What part of Ontario do you hunt in? Are ticks a problem in your area? I hunt in Eastern Ontario around Perth & have never seen a tick.
The trespassers I refered to in my previous post were fisherman on my Cousin's farm north of TO. The local police politely told him to stop calling them about trespassers. He was able to get the town council to extend the no parking area to about 1/4 mile on each side of the road which helped a little. I don't think I will have to worry too much about trespassers at my Uncle's place near Perth, but I will be on the lookout for them. There is no public land nearby, & I know all the neighbors :).
I attended the Sportsman show in Ottawa yesterday, & was the only person to show up for the Turkey seminar they put on. Surprised me that there was zero interest. Worked out great for me as I had the seminar host to myself for about an hour. Picked up a few good tips for this Spring & got to look at all his equipment. He said he wasn't surprised at the zero turnout, & that Ottawa just wasn't a hunting town. Well that's O.K with me. Best of luck to everyone this Spring.

Great turkey!!

Hi Baron,

Great turkey! & on black powder too. I guess you have to make up your own loads. That is a nice looking gun too. What part of Ontario do you hunt in? What is the range limit for black powder? Do you have friends in Okie & Kansas or do you use an outfitter?

George

Hey Baron :

You mean you can actually kill a Turkey without 3-1/2" copper plated grex-buffered super dooper pooper mgnums in an old gun that isn't painted in 14 colours of green and brown ???? Man where's your face paint, how we gonna know you's a turkey thumper ??? ;)

Those Bp guns have been taking turkey for alotta years , long before the super-duper 3.5mag shotguns where even thought of. There's also extended/extra deer seasons for Bp.
My turf is in the Sarnia/Lambton area.
I use a Win. 120 Ranger 12ga. and camo the metal with that cloth type tape.
IMHO -one of the meanest turkey loads is the 2 3/4" Remington Duplex with a 4 and 6 shot mix . However , other shotguns may prefer other types of loads.

Yes... so many guys looking for the mythical 50 yard turkey gun. Super chokes, Hevi-shot, camo guns etc. I used to be in that group, but my seasons were over too fast. I decided it was more fun to be up close and personal with the birds. Good woodsmansip and knowing how to talk turkey make for some very exciting, close encounters.;) As for the face paint, I prefer a face mask. I take it off for pictures so that when I'm really old, I'll remember it was me in the photos.

The gun is a 20ga. flintlock - 42" straight cylinder bore (shoots a patched round-ball pretty good too). The max. effective range with 100gr. Goex FFg and 1 1/4oz. of shot is about 25 yards... 26 yards if you measure from the lock:D .

We have friends in OK and KS. We did go with an outfitter to Nebraska last year, and had a great hunt. The sad part is that it's too hard to fly with blackpowder (BP residue comes up as an explosive on the swab tests, and I have read it can make for some real nightmares with airport security). So, I tote a "modern" gun when I go south. After shooting open-bored blackpowder for a few years, it just seems too easy with my 870.

Oh... BTW... the flintlock works just dandy on geese too, with #4 Bismuth.

Hi Baron

Great pics! I never thought about the airport hassels with bp. What a nightmare that would be. I got the full treatment at the airport once when the sniffer dog liked my briefcase. On old guy next to me in line said "You must have some sandwiches in there" & the dog handler barked "He's NOT looking for sandwiches"! No sense of humor with these guys. I think they must have put that briefcase throught the xray machine about 15 times. No one laughted when I asked them "Is it starting to glow yet?" It's really no fun flying anymore. &$#@! terrorists! Send them all to Allah & let him sort them out.

Hi Momabear,

Good luck on your first turkey hunt. I will be my first Ontario hunt as well. Hunted them in Texas & NJ years ago. What part of the country will you be hunting in?

For the last few years these seminars have always been jammed, so it figures that it would eventually get to a point where the demand for the seminars would decrease.

The turkey hunting seminar at the Ottawa Sportsman show was for interest only. I wasn't the mandatory OFAH Turkey seminar that you have to take to get a turkey license. Yes I agree with you that the demand for the "official" seminars should decrease.
