Well, I've had enough exposure to rifles and shotgun since getting PAL. I think now is the right time to go for the handgun, but I want to approach it more carefully than I did with rifles.

I don't really want to start off with .22 as I had some familiarization with handgun in various calibres. Not long enough to get good with it, but adquate.
So it's gonna be either 9 or 45.
There's so many choices out there, it's little overwhelming. (Tried search, got a migraine after 5 minutes...)

What were you guys' starting pistol? What are some of the pistol that are good for starters, but still fun with bit of a kick to break-in your hand? Something I can stick with for a long time.

My first handgun was a 9mm, and I'm no worse for wear. Cheap ammunition to practise with, generally a less severe recoil impulse. Lots of fun, that's for sure. However, depending on your tastes and what fits your hand, you might want a revolver.

Like the GP100 I've got for sale for example.....

.45 is the nicest and most versatile out of 9mm, .40, and .45 in my opinion with the 9mm running a close second the the .40 a reaaaalllly long ways back. :p (I own .40's too, it's just hat it's not my fav cal)

.45 is very pricey to shoot, and 9mm is cheap. 9mm recoils less, but if you handload, the cost, and the recoil can be managed.

My first handgun was a Kimber .45, still have it, and I've been handloading since the start so I made light loads, 230grs at 630fps, that recoiled VERY lightly and were uber accurate.

Now for a first handgun? My honest advice is not an auto. Most people just don't shoot autos well right off the bat. A full size .357 revolver is about the most versatile and well rounded starter you'll encounter; start off with .38 wadcutters that seem to barely recoil more than .22's and step it up to full house 600 ft-lb .357's later. Although I didn't buy a revolver until the last two years...

There's so many good guns out there, decide what you want, like a single action, double action, or striker style (Glock) and then choose a cal and eliminate from there, really fun and easy. :)

If you're stuck on an auto, I recommend a 9mm. If you like metal, go CZ, Norinco NP29, Beretta, SIG, etc and if you like plastic look at Glock and H&K. :)

Good luck!

I had the same dilemma...
Ended up with a CZ85Combat, with the Kadet 22LR spare top end.....
The 22LR is great to bring you up to speed on the handling, sights and controls...uber cheap to shoot.
The CZ in 9MM is accurate, easy to handle and Timex tough.
I have gone though a s**tload of other guns in the meantime, but will never sell the CZ combo!
All in all, a great place to start....:D

I bought my first handgun last December and had similar experience as you.... I'd shot a few different handguns before but not enough to be very good. I went with a CZ-75B in 9mm... ammo is fairly cheap and I haven't lost my interest yet! I really like this gun and will probably keep it for a long time.

It's funny, that these days I can't seem to hear enough good things about CZ!
I actually fantasized about having CZ handgun for a long time, since reading certain japanese comicbook called "Gunsmith Cats" with main character always insisting on using a 'older' version of CZ:)

Check all the threads about it...

But in the end the best one is the one that feels best in your hand.

For me thats a 1911 based design. All the other autos I've tried don't "fit" as well and the revolvers usually have that icky arched grip thing happening.

If you like CZ's then try handling one to see how it feels to you, or better yet find a club member who will let you shoot it...

Reloading or not 9mm is cheapest, followed by 40 and leaving 45 in last place for cost.

.22 is great for practice since its about a tenth the cost of 9mm. Not cool, not macho, but very useful for developing skill and accuracy.

Try or handle as many pistols as you can before you buy one.

I've gone and tried some handguns, and I like CZ and HP, as well as that Jericho in 9mm. I like 1911, but although grip fits my hand, it just doesn't sit that naturally. CZ and HP is little bigger to grip, but strangely it's more comfortable. I don't know how that would affect in the long run. I guess I can forget about Jericho if I'm considering CZ, as I heard that Jericho is a copy of CZ somewhere.
What are your experience with HP? I have a firend who has CZ, so I can ask him or try his, but I don't know anyone who has HP. Is it like 1911 or totally different? How's mod? Is there a lot of aftermarket parts like 1911?
Oh, and I sort of held P99 briefly, and it felt real good in my hand. How does it shoot? Reliability? Come on all you James Bond out there, give me some feed back.

Edit

How's Steyr M-A1?
