going lead free

I feel that hunters are some of the biggest advocates for conservation out there. More so than any "conservationist" or "activist" group could ever be. If by switching to lead free ammo saves the life of even 1 raptor or bird of prey, or save the life of any animal, isn't it worth it? The quality of lead free rifle ammo is getting better and better every day and the price is coming down. And let's be honest here, most of us shoot less than a box of rifle shells a year big game hunting. The quality and availability of lead free shotgun ammo is better than its ever been and available in every gauge and sub gauge thats commercially available. For the couple extra dollars per box or the extra $100 or so a season it cost for lead free ammo, why not change?

I loaded 120gr Barnes TTSX in my ol' lady's 7mm-08 last fall. It dropped 3 deer with no issue. Killed just as fast and effective as any accubond or partition I've ever shot. I'll be loading the TTSX for my .260 and .280 for this fall and going away from lead projectiles. In Sask, its super common to shoot lead for upland game (mainly pheasants). Up until now, I've always shot lead for upland. But starting this fall, ill change over entirely to steel shotgun shells for all my bird hunting, not just for waterfowl.

If you save even 1 other animals life by switching to lead free and none toxic ammo, isn't it worth it? We all spend hundreds or thousands a year hunting, a couple extra dollars shouldnt limit anyone.

Lead free bullets just do not work for a lot of hunters. I'm not opposed to the idea but in reality most of my big game meat is shot with either a 20ga slug or lever action round. Neither have good lead free options.

I feel as though it is an excuse to avoid change....but a solid 25% of my firearms need lead. Poor choices perhaps...I'll likely shoot up the lead ammo that I have yet. Then if we can go with good non lead bullets....I'll use them for hunting.
Actually a solid brass bullet 'should be' cheaper...easier to make I'd think.

Road allowance clearing of grass by farmers kills oodles more bird nesting sights in western Canada than will ever fall to our hunting guns.

Steroids in livestock, sewage into oceans and St Lawrence River. Monsanto does what it wishes to our food industry. Algae bloom kills our pets caused by excess nitrogen and phosphuous.
Yeah. Farming.

I am not feeling any recipratory action in Canada presently. Hunters are a drop in the ocean of hypocracy.

I am not buying what you are selling.
Just move along now.

If you are that concerned about lead you better give up handloading, and shooting ranges. The lead in the primers is lead styphnate and thats the real bad shyte.

If you are that passionate about lead free bullets for hunting so be it. Just be a man of your convictions and quit shooting while you’re at it.

I have one box of lead shot shells left (SuperX 12ga 3"mag #4) I've been using for varmint/predator. My centerfire rifle inventory is exhausted. At the request of several farmers whose farms I hunt have asked about using lead free shot on their properties. I don't have an issue with it. The extra expense is a small price to pay for continued permission to access their farms. I know little about non-toxic. Can someone point me in the right direction for .243 and .270 non-toxic loads?

Sounds strange to me, farmers asking you to go with lead free shot. Waterfowl hunting has been lead free for a while so are they worried you will shoot a turkey or a coyote with lead shot?

Farmers in Saskatchewan could give a rats ass for what kind of shot shell you use. They just want the birds off their land.
Regarding your question.....There are several choices for non toxic ammunition.......Barnes - Vor-tex, Hornady - GMX, Federal - trophy copper( Lapua Naturalis bullet) and Federal TSX ( Barnes TTSX bullet) , Remington Premier green (Lapua Naturalis bullet).
