In june I will be going on my first black bear hunt. I am going to an outfitter for 1 week where my site has been baited for a month previous to my arrival, should make for an easy hunt;).

If I tag a blackie I plan on having the hide tanned and if its a great bear I'll probably have a rug made. I have never tasted bear and have heard mixed reviews, some like it... some don't. What do most of you guys do with your bear meat? sausage's? peperettes? roasts? any one have any recipes? any tips for my hunt, besides "bring a bug net...":p ?

Have fun. We just got back. We saw 2 Chocolate's 2 Blondes, about 12 Blacks and 2 Griz in 5 days. Bear is similar to grainy beef if it is barbque'd. Some ppl smoke the hams. Cook it well done as bears can carry tricanosis. Bear hunting is a hoot, you'll have a great time. I don't know if your hunting over bait. We don't, we prefer spot and stock.

Don't count on it being an easy hunt Goose... Bears over bait are tricky.
Listen to your outfitter and take some toilet paper.:p

I should have written "will make for a comfortable hunt".

I'm not accustomed to having all the hard work done by someone else. I'll I have to do is sit, sweat and shoot;)

what do you mean by "bears over bait are tricky?", you suppose they won't give me an clear shot? circle the bait area before approching it? be specific/helpful?
thanks

good luck goose, theres nothing hard about hunting bruins over bait , its just a different hunt all together and will certainly be fun........and will be a great primer for moose and deer
bring a fly net or a "thermacell" to ward off the bugs...and try not to shoot the first bear, just relax and enjoy the show!!!!!! :)

Bear meat is delicious. Pan-fried loin steaks are fabulous, as is a nice roast. Bear makes great jerky, and I have eaten succulent bear sausages that were half bear, half moose meat. I would suggest removing every last scrap of fat off the meat before cooking it, though.

I have never eaten bear liver or heart. I seem to recall that there was or is an advisory against eating the liver for some reason, but I think the heart should be OK. Good question for the guys who get a lot of bear, which I do not (and I have never shot one).

Hope you have a GREAT hunt!

A good outfitter will use bug spray every time he baits a site... find out what kind he uses... if he doesn't do that... get a bug suit.
Sows are hard to tell from boars in the low light... tricky.
Scent and movement are imperative when sitting a bear bait... many times they will circle the bait and you before coming in....tricky.
You can sit for many hours on many different baits before you see one in shooting light... very tricky.
All I am saying is if you go in thinking it will be a cake walk to hunt over bait... you may be dissapointed.
I hope you spank a big boar in the first ten minutes and prove me wrong Goose.:)
