So guys takes car in, is running rough, fellow adjusts carb (carburetor, can look it up) with one twist of the screwdriver and charges $50. Fellow says thats an outrage, you just turned a screw. Mechanic says okay, okay, I'll adjust the bill... $1 to turn screw, $49 to know which screw to turn...
Old joke, I know. But the mech has the skill which took time and money to develop. Perhaps not the smartest business move though, guy wont come back anymore and any other job likely to be bigger.
Sears tries really hard to give good service - they look at each customer as $1,000,000 - over your life will need furnace, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, some tools, some lawn furniture, some tvs, couple pairs of socks & underwear... try to keep their customers (interesting how no more woodwords, no more eatons, no more woolworth, no more... sears still there).
