And I hope you don't limit yourself to marlins LOL!!!!!!!!!:D

started out with the williams clamp on, which is great for marlins, and then bought the forster universal fixture, which is the way to go. don't drill and tap too many holes for $6.99 unless your having a fire sale. LOL

Most gunsmiths in my province (Qc) charge up to $15/hole.
I live in a rural community and we only ever charge that on expensive firearms. When hunters bring me an Enfield or old Mauser I charge $10/hole. If we were to charge more they wouldn`t get it done because when you add the base, rings and a scope it can cost more than the gun is worth.

However, if someone brings you something really special, expensive or difficult and you have to put on the kid gloves and work extra, the cost should reflect this and $25 is reasonable.

if you have owned a rifle a poor smith has drilled and tapped you would think $100 to $150 or so is resonable to have it done properly. the mess a supposed "gunsmith" did to a mauser 98 i owned was criminal. when i got it back and removed the base he had misdrilled and welded up an incorrect hole. the base covered up most of his mess. you could see the bluing touch up under the edges of the base.

We just finished restoring a Super Blackhawk that had been butchered by someone else. The supposed "smith" had installed a scope base by drilling three holes in the barrel and as many on the frame. None of the holes were the same depth or in line with the other or the bore for that matter. He had also used three different kinds of screws and some of them didn`t hold because the holes in the barrel were too shallow. It took a lot of work so the gun doesn`t look like a piece of junk anymore.

And the problem is?

If the person wants the work done, he pays.

The setup time and the risks are the same whether it's a high end gun or a junker. You break a drill bit and a couple of taps, you're in the hole. One price does all, and that is fair to all.

repete is right, but i think we've all done what sas807 is talking about.the situation ,is that an older guy comes in with a cooey 840, 64 or a stevens 58 and such and the parts regardless of what has to fixed exceeds the value of the gun. he grumbles about the price to fix it and says he could buy another good used gun for less. ok, but then he says how do i do that with a POL.LOLyou either fix it or do without. i had an old guy wanted the mounts for a cooey 64. side mount and base to install is more than this gun is worth. but your right repete a hole is a hole drilled and then it's tapped, whether it's a cooey or a kimber.

You`re both quite right. But if I charge $25/hole on an Enfield or on a Cooey, I also miss out on the sale of a scope, a base and rings set, the installation fee, optional sighting-in fee, my machinery sits idle and so do I. I consider it easy work that I wouldn`t get if I charged more and when that customer can afford better gear he`ll come back and see us.

An hours worth of work is an hours worth of work, whether you're at the automotive garage - or the gunsmith's. But then again ... there's that hour's worth of work at the Lawyer's or the Doctor's !!!

For those of you who consider these prices too high--I'd bet my last dollar that you'd be the first and loudest to demand full restitution for your pride and joy if anything went wrong from the intial work to ten years down the road, it takes a lot of good customers to make up for your kind. I knew a toolmaker who said he never buggered a tapped hole however I never saw him drill and tap a hole that a 3A NO GO wouldn't work like a GO guage

I started out charging $15 per hole, prices went up as the cost of bits and taps went up. I am now charging $19 per hole. All work done is on a Forster jig. Screw up once and your name is mud!

OH YEAH. and then all they do is talk about the lousy work you do and the high prices you charge.

So guys takes car in, is running rough, fellow adjusts carb (carburetor, can look it up) with one twist of the screwdriver and charges $50. Fellow says thats an outrage, you just turned a screw. Mechanic says okay, okay, I'll adjust the bill... $1 to turn screw, $49 to know which screw to turn...

Old joke, I know. But the mech has the skill which took time and money to develop. Perhaps not the smartest business move though, guy wont come back anymore and any other job likely to be bigger.

Sears tries really hard to give good service - they look at each customer as $1,000,000 - over your life will need furnace, vacuum cleaners, lawn mowers, some tools, some lawn furniture, some tvs, couple pairs of socks & underwear... try to keep their customers (interesting how no more woodwords, no more eatons, no more woolworth, no more... sears still there).

If something went wrong with my pride and joy, I’d want my money back for sure…
all that was being said is that mistakes can happen and you have to charge enough to be a reputable business and make restitution when and if something goes wrong..

a competent gunsmith is an artisian, if you find a good one that does quality work you must expect to pay a premium
