I got me fresh Hastings Paradox 12 ga barrel last week for my Rem 870 and love the quality of the bugger. Thanks Tradeex.:) I'll be working up cast, full bore 825 gr
boolit loads to around 1100 fps for plopping big assed, peed-off furry things inside 80 yds as well as for super fun plinkin'.

How many other Nutz out there go with the well proven, rifled 12 bore Paradox route for anchoring game or fun shootin' ?

The Remmy.

Energy with the 825 gr bullet at 1100 fps is 2217 fp. Same bullet at 1250 fps delivers 2863 fpe. The original Paradox loads tossed a 750 gr cast bullet at 1250 fps for 2600 fpe and they worked well on heavy & dangerous game in Africa back in the day. The energy levels may seem tame to some folks, but the momentum of a .730" hardcast 750-800+ gr boolit carries the mail bigtime on game & with full penetration on critters such as moose & big bears.

Trajectory is rainbow out beyond 100 yds or so and recoil is on par with a 12 ga 3" mag with 2oz shot load at similar speeds. I'll zero mine to hit on at 80 yds.

Wow! I've never heard of this I will have to do a bit of research. For the bullets are they going to be pure lead or a bit of a harder cast? I think in this application doing something with some wheel weights makes a bit of sense and possibly a heat treatment. With some hi tek or powder coat for good measure!

I reckon I'll be using wheel weight lead with some 50/50 tin solder blended in to reach 15 BHN which boolit casters refer to as Lyman #2 alloy. It will work fine in my barrel at the speeds I intend to push these bombs, and they'll be lubed with Lee Alox. Dixie Slugs used a harder alloy in their 735gr Terminator loads which I figure was around 18-20 BHN.

My loads will closely follow Dixie's as far as pressures go. I'll not go past 10,500 psi in my gun as the Hastings barrel is of standard wall thickness. (Dixie recommends
Hastings barrels for their ammo.) Folks wanting more oomph can order a heavy barrel from Hastings that has a cantilever scope mount, but no irons to fit the 870 or
could go with the bolt action Savage 212 or a good used H&R Ultra Slug Hunter. The browning A Bolt 12 bore is a nice option as well.;)

Super interested in this, can you shoot that slug through a smooth bore as well?

Naaa, not really. These boolits are designed for rifled bores and would most likely keyhole at any distance past 20 yds or so, plus your groups would suck huge. One must not shoot these through any smooth bore that has a choke. Cylinder bore only fer folks that just gotta try 'er anyways.

Big warning to those wanting to plop these buggers from a smooth bore. Make sure yer bore measures at minumum .730-732" I mention this fer folks that might try 'em in a Belgium Browning A-5 or other older Euro guns that have bores of only .725" as this may cause a burst barrel.:sok2

Solid projectiles from a smooth bore must be a slip fit in the bore to ensure safety.

Got my mold t'day and cast up a few of the 825 gr bombs using straight wheel weight lead fluxed with Marvelux. These are hefty beasties fer sure. Just awaiting fresh 3" hulls, wads & gas seals to work up a decent load with.;)

The 825 gr bear charge stopper bomb next to my 400 gr .475 Linebaugh boolit.

Viewed from above, the advantage is even more obvious. Oh de fun of it!

Thanks for the reply, I am still very interested, may need to get a rifled shotgun.

I went to Old West Bullet Moulds and couldn't find them . I clicked on the full list and went through 8 pages of moulds, but could not find this one. : (
