Well, I (or, we, rather) are going to Africa. It will be my first time there, and I am SO, SO looking forward to this trip that I find it hard to explain how excited I am. I am taking my wife with me, because I don't think I could go somewhere that cool, and not take her. I spent 25 years in the PPCLI going to neat places without her, so....it's her turn, too. We're going to South Africa, to Cruiser Safaris. I am going to purchase their ten day package, which includes a Southern greater Kudu, Gemsbuck, Blue Wildebeest, Blesbok, Impala, and.....Warthog!!! I want to add a Red hartebeest, and, possibly, a Zebra. It looks like there lots for the non-hunters to do, although I am going to try to convince my wife to come along on a day or two of hunting. I'm going to take a Husqvarna Model 98 in 9.3x62, with handloaded 286 grain Nosler Partitions, and, my Rem 700 SS in 338 Win Mag, with either 210 or 225 Nosler Partitions. The planning and research is ongoing, and......oh, boy, I don't know if I can contain myself!!!! I have received word from numerous references, and they all have good things to say about Cruiser's operation. I will keep everyone updated.

A 9.3x62 is may go to rifle for Africa. Buy the book The Perfect Shot for Africa and study it. Most of your shots in the bushveldt will be under 100 yards, Blesbuck may be out to 300 yards and can be frustrating to hunt. Buy or build a set of shooting sticks and practice with them. Listen to your PH they have a lot of knowledge. The most important thing is have fun. I'm going on my 3rd trip to South Africa in May for Buffalo, and I have hunts booked till 2015. Enjoy

You're going to regret this...regret not going sooner, that is. Congrats, and have a great time!

If you aren't already aware of it, you should check out the Accurate Reloading forum. They have several subforums devoted to African hunting, and are a goldmine of information. I have read several hunt reports there recently dealing with Cruiser Safaris.

Yep; also going to South Africa,....to Hunters Hill. Leaving June 1st. My first time but going with a buddy who knows the ropes. Taking a Ruger No1 in 30-06 for plains critters. Gotta get out and practice with the sticks as soon as the snow melts. My homemade ones are kinda wobbly so takes some practice alright......wTc

Have an awesome trip. We are headed back to Africa for our second trip (first to SA) in May and hope to take some of the plains game we didn't get in Namibia and Vanessa is going to hunt lioness so pretty pumped about that but as others have warned, don't think this will be your one and only trip. .375 H&H and .30-06 for us on this trip.

how much does one of these trips cost?

In a general sort of way(and includeing airfare) plains games hunts cost about the same as a new quad, buffalo hunts cost about the same as a decent secondhand 4 x 4 pickup and elephant about the same as a new one. Taxidermy and freight not included.

Or the other way is to take quoted package price, double that plus add $5000. Add taxidermy and freight to that.

The nice thing about it though, is that cost can be spread out over three or four years from the time you pay your deposit until the taxidermy is home.

I just returned a week ago from SA and loved it there. It's a beautiful Country and as long as your wife is with your outfitters and guides she will be fine and have a blast. My wife and I loved it and want to go back someday. Good advice on studying shot placement on African animals as they are just not built the same as NA critters. I shot a couple a tad far back and we had to do a bit of tracking but we had happy endings (except on a Wildebeest but that's a whole other story). I shot Impala, Blesbok and Kudu with a 30 06' and 180 bonded with good results so your well geared.

Go with an open minded attitude and have a blast.

I'm getting close to having that problem; 2010, 2011, 2014... Still OK, not annual yet.

Ya, but if not there it would be somewhere else. Same problem either way.

If a person could learn to live with a pile of pictures instead of taxidermy then going twice as often would cost about the same. That's hard to do, but running out of walls helps.

just having the capes tanned is also a good way not spending as much and then you can later on get them mounted
