The 40 S&W thread got me thinking...

I am now planning for next year to hunt blacktail deer in super thick bush but very close to a residential area it is legal to hunt there but I do not want to bother anyone or let others know that I am shooting.

So I am going to be using my 22" barreled T/C Contender carbine in 45-70 loaded with some very special 450gr cast bullet loads they will be seated into the case backwards for the widest meplat that you can imagine and they will only be doing 300fps.

The load of 3grs Tite-Group held in place with styrofoam is so quiet that the hammer hitting is louder than the shot these will group appr 1 1/2" using iron sights and shoot thru a 2" X 4" @ 25 yards.

The goal will be to get very close 20 - 25 yards max and shoot the deer thru the lungs/heart if I can't get close enough I will not shoot.

I worked with Paco Kelly's data to develop my loads he has shot a coyote @ 50 yards using the same velocities and a slightly lighter 400gr bullet the bullet hit the coyote square in the chest and exited the off side of the chest.

Ok I'm ready I can take it let the spewing begin... :p

interesting. why not bump it up to 5-600fps you would still be below the speed of sound and muzzle blast would be negligible?

mot really much different than hunting with a bow/ crossbow why not do that if you are concerned aboout noise

300 fps? You meant 800, right?

At 300 fps you have 90 ft-lbs of muzzle energy and 19.29 ft-lb/s momentum.

Here is how it works to make the load silent I need to have all of the powder burn completely before the bullet exits the barrel a higher velocity takes more powder and even with the fastest powders I've tried any faster velocity and the loads are surprisingly loud.

300fps nope not a typo... :D

You wouldn't dare go in the Aldergrove Game Farm / Zoo....would you ??

Interesting idea.

I've gone back and forth several times on whether or to start experimenting with very heavy subsonic loads for a couple of my hunting rifles. Being able to drop game at close range with more of a "pop" than a big "bang" is an appealing idea!

Please do keep us posted on this!

But where is the challenge in that... :p

I've shot so many deer even 8 with a bow and arrow I have to try something different...

Tell you what before I go after deer I'll take it coyote hunting call a couple of them into 20 - 40 yards and let them have it if it isn't a clean kill I'll not hunt deer if it is I will... :)

Just checked a ballistic calculator Elmers 240gr bullets would have with a muzzle velocity of 1400fps still been doing 800fps @ 600 yards.

on second thought:

I'd be curious to see how such a blunt slow object handles a deer rib....

if you can get the accuracy out it it would be a hell of a grouse load....

interesting.

There was a report of good success hunting with a 45-70 using 400gr hollowpoints at ~800fps, and that worked well and was still subsonic. I'll try and find the article.

but they are not silent I had to get them down to 300fps to make them silent...

Remember Elmer Kieth he shot a buck at appr 600 yards with his 44 mag if I remember the story correctly the 240gr semi-wad cutter passed completely thru the deer killing it.

I'm only looking at shooting 20 -25 yards with a bullet 200grs heavier and a far wider meplat... :)

seem to recal a guy last year selling a single shot shotgun that he had developed a 45 long colt round for. said it was almost completely silent and quite accurate at modest distance.wish i had saved the page to reread .sounded quite interesting

I'll answer your question this way, ever heard of someone doing what I am going to try before and I've already killed deer with an arrow...

It would amaze your clients they will find it hard to believe that they couldn't hear your shot but you have a dead grouse in your hands... :D
