Going to join IPSC I'm reading the rules etc. Wondering about belt size

Hi,
I am thinking of enrolling in an IPSC Black Badge course.
I was reading over a bunch of their information on their website and am curious about this:

Gun Belt
The belt should be 1.75 inches wide and must be of sufficient strength and stiffness to hold the holster in the same position at all times. The holster should not be able to slide on the belt and the belt and holster loops should be the same size as the belt.

I currently have a High Speed Gear 1.5" Cobra Rigger Belt. I guess according to the IPSC quote above I will need to get a new 1.75" wide belt.
Could anyone clarify that for me please?

No one is going to get out the measuring tape on your belt. The intent is to make sure you have a stiff belt that will hold all of the pouches and holster without movement, as you said. When you do the BB course don't worry about having all the spec gear. You'll know after the course what to get that works better than what you brought in.
 
You can use any belt you want as long as it goes through at least three belt loops. Whether it will work well or not is a different matter. Most people seem to end up with a double layer belt specifically for shooting because they are very stiff and keep your holster and mag holders where you want them. I have the DAA one, but lots of people use a similar belt from CR Speed. These belts have an inner that goes through your belt loops that has the loop side of Velcro over the whole outside of the belt. The outer belt is what your holster and other stuff attach to and us reinforced with plastic. This outer belt wraps around your waist outside of your belt loops so everything can be permanently attached to it. This style of belt is more convenient than a regular belt, but that doesn't mean a normal belt won't work.

I took my BB day 1 with a old duty belt combo, and found it so flimsy that first day that I just went and bought a new leather belt at wal mart for day 2.

Now I have a DAA Belt, and it makes a world of difference. Wish I had spent a bit more in the beginning on the gear that I could have "grown into" with experience, instead of now 7 months and 2 matches later I have replaced the belt, holster, and am now buying new mag holders.
I didnt know what to really look for before, and wanted to save the money, but would have been a easier and cheaper path over all if I would have just spent half hour in person before my bb course talking to a ipsc shooter and looking at the gear.

Thanks guys for your help and comments. A number of the employees at the RDSC shoot IPSC. I will ask them. I would rather start with at least some basic, good, proper gear. This HSG belt is so stiff I can't bend it and it has the double layers. But I can return it.

Sunday 3-6 is ipsc practise, although I have been stuck working the part bazillion Sundays, there's some really great local talent that would be a huge help for you
Who are you taking your BB thru? I have to recommend Joey Tolentino, he does it up in spruce grove, and was phenomenal!
I made a thread on it a while back
Ipsc Alberta also has a facebook page you can ask anything on, its pretty active and helps that its local.

Thanks man! I don't know. I just sent an email to the IPSC zone manager today and haven't heard back. I did hear really great things about Joey Tolentino and I did send him an email but I haven't heard back yet.
I will have to drop in on Sunday during that time frame. I was going to go tomorrow anyway.
P.S. I just bought a new Walther PPQ-navy from the folks at RDSC and I got to say it's awesome. I have a S&W MP9 that I like but this Walther has just become my go to every day shooter.

the ipsc rulebooks does not contain the phrase

so im not sure where that comes from but I don't see why a 1.5" belt wouldn't work. my AA belt is 1.5" and I believe that is very common.

a good belt with an inner and outer is key. your belt is the foundations for your entire rig. AA and CR speed make excellent belts for around 40$.

the belt you mentioned will work fine for your black badge course. there you will learn lot about different gear and be able to see what everyone else has. then you can decide whether or not you need something else.
 
1.75" width is maximum width, most competitors use 1.5" wide competition belts.

Edit: correction:
IDPA has a belt width rule, didn't find one for IPSC.

Nope, that's not in the rulebook. There is no limit on belt width, but it must go through 3 belt loops or be attached to an inner belt that goes through at least 3 loops (which can be any width).

2" belts are available and used in competition, however 1.5" is the most common. Some holsters will not fit the wider belts.
