Gold Bayonets for SKS

I'm thinking about Buying A Russian SKS that is unissued,unreferbed,unfired from A dealer and it looks to be in pristine condition. The one thing i'm curious about is it has a gold bayonet and I cant find info anywhere. It doesn't look to be just oil stained as it's not blotchy and covered evenly...It makes it look really good but is it worth paying a little extra???? Whats a good price for such a rifle??? I'm pretty sure its a 1951. Any help would be great.....Thanks
 
I have a Tula 51 non-refurb with gold bayonet. Pretty, but it looks like a varnish only but do not want to use the acetone test on it.

Is it worth paying extra? I'd pay 10 bucks max, sure. But that's just me. I will zero this rifle, clean and oil it before I put it back in the safe. Yup, it will be a safe queen as my 55 laminated stock just begs to be shot.

If this is true, it will be a pity to shoot it. I'd get another to shoot.

There is a lot of speculation about the gold bayos. Most of the ones with the gold bayos, are in pristine shape and the ones that are not gold coloured, look like the bayos were bead blasted. IMHO, they look nicer as collectors.
 
I think the gold bayo is a result of being stained with the packing grease, and not necessarily original. Probably the "matte" finish originaly. Isn't the shiney style bayo more indicative of not being replaced? Some of the buckles on the slings are gold coloured too.

The "matte" finish is a result of bead blasting. Gold ones may be caused by packing grease or cosmo, but under neath looks shiny not bead blasted.
 
I just bought one of those, most likely from the same dealer. He told me the gold colouring is a result of some sort of chemical reaction happening during storage. I paid the extra $10.00 as it just looked different enough to me to make it worth it.

The unissued, non-refurbs are a little pricier than the standard surplus ones but if you want a collector, or just something that you know hasn't been messed with, then I think it's worth it, but that all depends on how badly you want it. In the end you'll pay what it's worth to you.

I'm happy with mine and I don't even have it yet. I've made several deals with Jacques in the past and he delivers what he says he will.

OK, Here is my take on the Gold Bayo mystery:

All of my SKS' that have Gold Bayo's, have matching #'s, unissued, and are in prestine shape. The one with the dull grey bayo, is forced matched, EPed, #'s Xed out, painted bolt and barrel.

Upon closer examination of the gold bayo's, if you were to use a chemical to remove the gold "stain", it would turn out to look dull grey.

My opinion: The ones with gold bayo's are in much better shape and you have better chances that all serial #'s are matching, unfired ( I use this term very loosely) and better chances of it being unissued.
 
Hate to break up your party Gommee. But I've had refurbs with gold bayonets. I have one of the rare IZH all matching number black bolt refurbs listed on the EE presently,and it has a gold bayonet.
 
This is very interesting discussion. I wonder that if that it is staining due to the way in which these rifles were stored? Does anyone one this board have any first hand knowledge on how these rifles were persevered for "long term storage"?

More the merrier Woodbeef...lol

All I can state is my first hand knowledge. Please add or subtract, you and Curtton are the Guru's. So far, all of my gold bayos are matching.
