I have a series 80 Gold Cup that for some reason the firing pin moves too far forward and locks ahead of the slide safety pin, and when the slide is released and loads a round the firing pin contacts the primer, firing the round off. This has happened twice to me now. I haven't dissassembled the gun yet to find out what is wrong. Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem.

You sure the hammer isn't falling?
I had that happen to my 1911 where the sear let go under the energy of the slide going forward.
But if the firing pin is sticking, check to see if its dirty and maby need a new firing pin spring.

Check to see that the firing pin spring is on the right way. Small dia. end of the spring goes over the pin FIRST, large dia. end is at the tip end.
If you look carefuly you will notice the difference right away.
If you put it in backwards, the FP will stick in the chanel. Hope this helps.

I've had the same problem several times with my .45 Caspian.

It has lost it's strength and the firing pin remains outside the firing pin hole after firing.

I would guess the gun was disasembled and the serie 80 safety mechanisim was put back wrongly.
There is no way this will happen if the slide safety plunger is in place. The plunger lock the firing pin in place until the trigger is pulled.

take it apart and used bore solvent on the firing pin chanel .Use Q tips to clean it out . I had the same problem .There was tons of crud built up in there . Leave the firing pin and spring in solvent overnight . If this does not work buy a new firing pin and spring .there cheap like 10 for the pin and 2 for the spring .
use hoppes bore solvent to clean the firing pin channel .and take the firing pin and spring and soak them in gasoline overnight . Some people may disagree with this but it works . just be careful with the gas .if the slamfires continue buy a new pin and spring .marstar would be a good souce for a few cheap items like that .

It it quite fast to field strip a 1911 and it should be done after each firing session. It is really worry me than you went to the extend of having the firing pin channel that dirty. What the rest of the gun internal should look then ??? Ask somebody to show you how to field strip it AND fully strip it, cleaning it ,proper maintenance and lubrification...for you safety and the one of the other shooters on the firing line. This should have neved happened. Slam fire are a dangerous situation and you can get people injured if that muzzle is in the wrong place when that happen.

There are different levels of cleaning a 1911 IMO. The regular field strip and cleaning should be done after every session or 1-200 rounds as you wish. The firing pin and extractor channels should be cleaned out every few thousand rounds in my experience. Hoppes and Q-Tips work great. And a detail strip and cleaning is an annual thing for me, with a good set of instructions for how to do disassemble and reassemble kept nearby, because it's not as easy as one might like to think when you only do it irregularly. I've got a Series 70 Gold Cup, and that microscopic little extra spring to prevent hammer bounce is way too easy to lose. I disassemble inside a plastic bag when doing a detail strip.

A few thousand round is too long. The 1911 desing is very forgiving but a few thousand round is stretching it. They should be cleaned each firing session.
Keep you guns clean, lubricated and well maintained and do it each firing session.
