Gong material

I was thinking of building a gong for my 6br to put out at longer distances and was wondering what type of metal I should be looking for. I'm sure I could find some old grader blade or something similar kicking around. Would this material be sufficient?

If you can get grader blade go for it and get all you can. Only alternative is AR500 steel which you will find quite expensive and a little hard to come by. The targets below are AR500 from my local source.

If you plan on shooting over 600 and are handy with a welder you may like this design to put the blade on. I made the one with the red and white indicators and use it all the time for over 600. Any movement of the target and you can see it easily without any optics at 1000 with .308 or greater. The .223 does not move it though at 600.

2 members on here sell AR500 gongs cheap in diffrent sizes and shapes...Matt Moser and BJB ....both will ship them from Ont
Matt is out of T.O and BJB is near Ottawa

If you happen to follow the advice of the additional posts and are in Manitoba, I will take the grader blade and build targets out of it. I am sure we can work out some exchange. I build lots.

How far out? If you are at 400 and over just try scrap metal, no need for expensive ar500 metal that far out. I have shot mild steel with 308 at 600 with no problems, just repaint and good to go!

I've got some scrap metal targets, some buggy blade, some mild steel of various thickness and quite a few AR500s now. The biggest thing is to get something and get shooting. I wasted too much time waiting to get something for nothing, pay a few bucks for the good stuff and be done with it. Matt Moser's rates seem quite fair and if I'm reading the Canada post site correctly then ordering 2 at a time seems reasonable.

I use scrap steel. I am testing out some brake rotors (have some leftover after doing the brakes on my wife's vehicle) and metal discs from farm equipment.
Anything that rings and swings.

PM Matt Moser. I have three of his targets and they are great. His prices are very reasonable. Once you have it you will not regret the purchase.

At that distance any steel works. Mild steel will still crater but you're not shooting it at 10-20yards with a pistol so you don't have to worry about shrapnel coming back and hitting you. The AR400 and 500 is a lot harder so you will get a little better ring off of a hit and it will be a lot more durable but to me the cost isn't justified with so much cheap/free mild steel floating around. If you do shoot at closer ranges the 400 and 500 are worth every penny for the safety factor alone, neverming the durability.

Matt Moser is the man I have a bunch of his stuff and it has stood up very well even to 50 BMG at 200 yards. At 1700 yards .338LM with Scenars just scuff 1/4 mild steel plate FYI temp was -15

Let us know how that goes, I was just about to see if I could trade some rotors at the scrapyard for some plate.

I was thinking for 600 yards and beyond. Maybe 500 yards.

With a 6BR you will be fine at 300 yards with AR500 steel. Even my 300WM shooting a 208gr amax just barely makes a nick.

When you get steel just start out with the "expensive" because if you treat it right it will last you a life time.

Thanks for all the replys. What would be a good size for a gong for 500-1000 yards/meters?

If you want to simulate the vitals of an animal, then 10-12" is nice. For a challenge 1MOA is about right. If you want to be able to see where you're hitting, even when you're off the mark, then 2-3MOA is about right.
