Here's a photo of my 1952 blonde laminate SKS that was carefully sanded and refinished in multiple coats of tung oil. After approximately 8 months, the tung oil finish has nicely darkened with age, really bringing out the grain detail:

hope I got the pictures to work. first try at uploading..... Not the best photographer in the world but here is our finished rifle. My girlfriend Lori stripped and refinished it with Tru-oil.... I just took it apart and added the aftermarket junk

I personally would not paint the stock. I tried that once, and the paint looked just wrong, hard to describe.
