Im shooting a bolt action 22 LR and am wondering what is the best ammo for gopher killing? I bought some CCI stingers which I was told are the fastest factory ammo. Any other ammo thats good to give a try?

Cheers!!

Eley match .22, expensive but good shooters. CCI makes Maxi mags as well. Alot of guys at my club use american eagle. Some also use Remington Thunderbolts. My .02

What ever brand is the most accurate in your particular gun. Remember you are looking at a small target but not a particularly tough one. Most target ammo will do the job.

I'd go with what's the most accurate hollow point, as that's more important to me than the ultimate gopher ripper opener of a cartridge. American Eagle 38gr hp's work well in my guns, and so do cci mini mags, both accurate, and all I'd expect from a 22LR in terms of gopher impact. If you hit them solid, that makes more difference than anything else.

I use thousands of Winchester hollow points for gophers. Most shots you will do with a .22 are around 50 yards or less. No necessity for a really fast bullet, as hitting solid and fast kills ,I deem are more important than the fast , long range, questionable shots that may wound and cause suffering. It may be a rodent but they deserve a quick end .Google shooting gophers and watch some of the shooting.

Can't say for sure about killing gophers, never tried it. I can however say, that I've not found stingers to be a particularly accurate 22lr round. Your range however extended by a faster round, will be limitted by a less accurate round. Unless you're just lucky and your particular rifle can shoot well with them, in which case, have fun.

yah I used to buy them but lately had alot of them that were bad.. seems it might be just a bad batch but it would jam alot bend the caseing while feeding.. some would have less powder then normal and the brass caseing seems to be alot thinner then the last few I bought.. seems like they cut back abit went to fedurel .22 lr hp copper wont go back to windchester unless I buting there steel plated ones for targets..

Most of my .22s over the years have shot very well with Winchester PowerPoints. My CZ shoots them as well as any of the expensive match stuff. They also do a nice job on the receiving end !!

I just got back from shooting some gophers in Sask. and my partner was using QuikShocks, they were very impressive in my opinion. FS

Stingers have always been my favorite, buy in fairness I haven't tried Velocitors yet. I'm almost out of my last brick of Stingers, so I might have to try a box or two of Velocitors and see how they shoot out of the 'ol 10/22.

I've found through testing on various materials (water, plasticene, homemade ballistic gel) that the velocitors and remingtom subsonic have no appreciably difference in expansion, the velocitors just have more penetration.
I would imagine similar results would be seen from any hollowpoint.
I also tryed some CCI blazer that is just a lead round nose. These would not be my choice for use on game as they did not expand well at all, but for cheap bulk ammo they shot great for me.
*Edit: On the other hand the CCI quik shok ammo is awesome, the fragmentation in the gel was really impressive.
