Good 223 Varmint rounds?

Okay guys,

I'm going to work up two loads for my Rem 700 SPS Tac.

1) 69 gr SMK Load for paper work, got that mostly figured out.

2) A very light very fast varmint load.


Need your help with number 2, looking for a reliable round you guys are using around 36 gr or so. What would you recommend, must be easy to find.

Hornady V-Max are good bullets. The SPSX are supposed to be entertaining to watch when they connect.
 
I second the noslers. I have been using 55gn ballistic tips over 24.5gns of accurate 2230 with ridiculous results. Nothing but pink mist when it hits a gopher at 200yards. By the way i also am shooting out of a remington 700sps with 20" barrell 1 in 9 twist.
 
Either nosler ballistic tips(50gr) ot hornady vmax (53gr) over 25.7gr of varget. Great results on gophers. Will be loading some more 40gr sierra hp right away to try out

Rifle is savage axis 223rem 1-9 twist
 
I have a box of 53gn Vmax superformance factory ammo. Hopefully they will show what they can do soon. I have one hit, cleanly removed everything from the shoulders up on a gopher, 100yrds or so. Sounded like a truck hitting a brick wall. :D

But the 40gn noslers are awesome. Not for preventing hide damage.
 
Was hoping for 40gr or lighter. Smashed a box of 36 gr ballistic tips today that we're HOT think that's the range I'm looking for. Are 36gr Barnes varmint grenades to light for a 1 in 9 twist?
 
Its not the weight of the bullet so much as the length of it in relation to twist rate. It just so happens that heavier bullets are usually longer. I have not shot a lot of light 30ish-50gr bullets from fast twist barrels to see how they shoot, but it is my understanding that the longer (heavier) stuff like 69, 75, 77, 80, 90gr will only stabilize in the 1- 9,8,7 inch barrels with the heaviest only shooting well in the faster two twists. The old 1:12 rifles dont shoot the long heavy ones well I am told.

I haven't really heard anything positive about the Varmint Grenades, other than good marketing.
 
For lighter than 68gr bullets (in a bolt gun) I've always liked to use Benchmark. It's a really good "Extreme" powder.

I shoot them in my 1-9 twist. They shoot great. I use varget 27.4gr gives me ~3450fps but isnt all that accurate 26.5 was really accurate though and at 3350fps I'm happy
