good .22LR ammo for 100m target shooting?

Hello,

I have a CZ 452 with a 3-9x33mm scope.

I've shot over 1700 rounds of all types of .22LR ammo through this rifle already, and I think it's about time I narrow it down to a single cartridge so that I can buy them by the crates.

There are lots of extremely accurate subsonic .22LR ammo, but they're all optimized for 50m shooting.

In your opinion, which cartridges are best for 100m shots and still be practically accurate in minor crosswind? Supersonic or subsonic?

Eley, Lapua, RWS, maybe even Fed Gold and Green tag.

Subsonic Match ammo is the best way to go. Just find the one that has the least amount of vertical dispersion and flyers for your rifle.

Odds are it will not be cheap.

Now if you can find it, CCI Blazer was one of the most accurate high velocity ammo I used in my silh rifles. Made for cheap practise. Maybe it will work for you too.

I found most of the hyper velocity stuff shot best at 100m for me. Stingers & Yellow Jackets worked pretty well for me.

Yup, I saw a program on CCI facilities (i think it was on Shooting USA) and their universal receiver placed three shots under an inch.

I just bought a CZ 452 Lux and I'm awaiting delivery, just curious as to what type / make shot best in your CZ 452?

I tried all the domestic target ammo's in my 452 American, and none shot as well as American Eagle 38gr hollow points. Maybe Eley or Lapua could improve on that, but I'm not willing to spend that much. Wind can sure blow 22LR off target at 100 yards.
 
Standard vel. or target vel. ammo will perform better in wind than the high or hyper vel. ammo. This isn't just seat-of-the-pants impression - this is proven over and over with lots of empirical evidence. Also, have a look at the Sticky at the top of this forum on Wind and Ballistic charts
As has already been stated you will need to find ammunition that suits your rifle. Generally the most consistency will be found with better quality and consequently higher priced brands and types. Even lot#s of the same type can vary.
When you find one that really works - get a bunch of it. You've got a good rifle , it deserves good fodder!

I have the exact same rifle, CZ 452 Lux (2E-ZKM); since this rifle was my very first firearm I took really good care of it. In return, it has been insanely accurate for its price!

So far I've been shooting the Eley 40gr Target Rifle cartridges (the econo version, not the REAL Eley ammunition), and I can consistently get 1/2" 5-shot groups at 50yd (shooting from a supported position)!

Just to give another example, when I had only 5 rounds left at the end of the day, I decided to try hitting the 4 thumb tacks holding up my target paper at 50yd. I missed on my 2nd shot, but still managed to knock off all 4 tacks! It hard to describe how good it feels when your rifle gives you this much confidence :D
 
I know what you mean as far as the confidence factor. That's pretty fair shooting by the way! About a 3/8" group. Post your target at 100 and see how it shoots with that ammo. Take an average of half a dozen 5 shot groups. It seems that really a lot happens between 50 and 100. Enjoy your new rifle - it should provide years of service.
If you're interested in a little 50yd/m competition, contact horseman2 . He is involved with a benchrest group at the Mission range. Could be fun!

I'll definitely be signing up for local competitions eventually; however, I'm still just a beginner. I don't wanna make the time and drive the distance, only to have my a$$ kicked by a bunch of 12-year-olds with junior rifles, LOL.
 
I don't own a CZ and can't comment on which ammo they like best, but some of the best groups I have shot at 30 and 50m with my Savage have been with CCI standard velocity ammo. I am going to try it at a 100 and see how I make out. I haven't found any advantage from the HV ammo at 100, but did shoot some Winchester SuperX High Veloicity ammo and it shot really well at 100m.

You'll get your a$$ kicked alright, but by a bunch of middle-aged men with $5000 rifles. You'll feel out of place with a CZ :D

It's all good, come out for the fun factor and meet new people. I came in 2nd last and I had a great time.

How true!! But back to the original question.....to shoot consistent 100 meter targets, you need to find out which type and lot number of true "Match" ammo shoots best in your CZ. I cannot speak for yours, but I have a 452 American, and, while very accurate, it's potential is only so great, regardless of ammo used. Good ammo does produce the best results, regardless. Mine prefers a certain lot number of Lapua Midas "M". Now when you step up to a dedicated target rifle like a 40X, Anschutz 54 match, Walther, Feinwerkbau, Suhl 150 or possibly a Winchester 52C,D or E. [Certain Coopers may qualify] Then the quality ammo really shows it's potential. While my CZ shows the odd spectacular group at 100 meters, it will average a bit over 1" at 100 meters with it's favorite ammo. The others I have will average considerably smaller groups. I have actually shot a few sub-1" groups at 200 meters with my 40X and Anschutz. [Haven't tried the Suhl yet]
For the dollar, the Cz is a great buy. If you are truly serious about competition, buy another rifle. Regards, Eagleye.

Thanks for the advice Eagleye, my local store has been selling Lapua Midas ammo for a while, but I've been too nervous to purchase them since I'm not yet good enough to tell the difference compared to other ammo; then there's also the issue being more expensive than 9mm para cartridges, lol

I'm not really into the extreme accuracy of Olympic level competition; I'm just trying to be a well rounded practical shooter that can perform in many types of shooting situations. For example if I was in a standing unsupported position, an Anschutz rifle with top-of-the-line ammo won't be much different compared to a 10/22 with $3/box ammo; majority of the error will come from me, the shooter.

Anyways, I guess sooner or later I gonna have to experiment with serious Eley, Lapua, and RWS ammo; I pray that I won't get addicted, or else my wallet's gonna hurt.
