hey everyone im looking into getting a good 30-30 rifle. i am consedering a marlin 336bl. what are your thoughts on it?

the new 336 marlin appear to be having some problems ejection, feeding and poor sight alignment as of late if you like them maybe wait a while or go with an older 336.

THe Mossberg has a good action when it loosens up, but the factory sights leave something to be desired. No problem if you scope it or go with peep type sights.

that's funny...I didnt think I'd ever see "good" and "30-30" in same sentance.

I think it's a more accurate statement to say: If you personally find this cartridge lacking somehow, I suggest you just silently move along rather than draw attention to your less attentive hunter skills & markmanship failings.
A poor workman blames his tools.

I just sold a 94. My eyes don't do well with open sights anymore. Even the peep didn't
help me much along. I purchased a Marlin 336 with a scope mounted on her.
Easy to hit 100 yard groups. This Marlin works slick. Easy to point and aim.
Between the two?????? Tough call. Ford........Chev.
I suppose if it wasn't for the tough to see down the barrel of open sights, I don't
think the 94 would of gone. Something about the old 94's.
Then again, if it weren't for that, I wouldn't of experienced the pleasure of this Marlin.
If you can, try one of these out?????
Both good.
Cheers.

While i like the 30/30 alot, the Marlin doesn't do much for me with it's micro-groove rifling, it's not cast bullet friendly, so it may be on the block.

I love my Marlin, probably 40 years old or more and shoots just as good as the day I bought it. I prefer the marlin over winchester only because I like the side eject so I can run it with a scope. Lots of older used ones available at reasonable cost.

I prefer a pre 64 model 94, nothing wrong with the Marlin 336 though just a personal preference. there is something just not right with a scope on a lever of that design in my opinion. One often overlooked 30-30 is the Savage 340 bolt, not real pretty but usually a very accurate rifle at the ranges that a 30-30 excell (under 150 yards) just another rifle to consider. There was also a Savage/CIL pump action that was also a great deer rifle in 30-30. Good luck in your search.

Either Win 94 (pre 1964 DOM) or Marlin 336 (older...before the company changed hands and recent QC problems have appeared) would be good choices. If you want to scope the rifle then buy a Marlin since the angle eject design, with flat-topped receiver (pre drilled for scope mounts from the factory), cannot be beaten in guns handling this caliber. Personally, I sold my Win 94s, except my XTR, and now have a single scoped Marlin. I'm a happy camper.

BTW, find a really nice one, check the bore if you can, and don't pay more than $400 under any circumstances. Unless it is a pre 64 NIB. ;)

The brand new Winchester 94's made by FN/Browning are the nicest and slickest they've ever been in my opinion. The $1200 price tag doesn't sit so well with me though.

I have both the 336 and the 94. I don't shoot the 94 as much but still prefer the overall looks. The 336 is scoped and I used it for 3 deer this year and all shots penetrated clear through. Really enjoyed hunting with it and will again next year.
