good 308 rifle

Lots of good suggestions.
You should settle on the action type that you prefer and then look at the options.
I currently use a BLR and Ruger ultra-lite both light and easy to carry.

I have quote a few differnt 308 rifles. My fvurites for huntin have been a Rem7600 and a BLR.

If this is your first and only 308, I suggest the Rem7600. It has a full floating barrel and out of the box tends to be more accurate than most bolt rifles.

I don't know about current production quality, but ab older, used one should be good. Install a low power variable scope, say 1.5 -4 power.

I really like my Weatherby carbine. Came with firesights and is in 308. For me, is the perfect truck and bush gun. Next to my ruger mini-14, but the 223 is limited in terms of going after big game.

For Timber hunting in adverse conditions, you can't beat a BLR81 in .308Win.
I used one since 1987 configured as follows except I used Redfield 5 star 4X32.
Top it with a nice WA 4X40 scope, butler creek covers for the rain and snow, and an Uncle Mikes hammer extension, to lay your big gloved thumb on during those frosty morning stalks. Handled like a carbine Marlin or 94 Winchester, and flattens them where they stand usually when right bullet is employed in the .308Win.

You can sit with it, in your ground blind or tree stand, and consider everything in a whitetail, fair game out to 275-300 as well. Just get used to the usually heavy trigger for the long range work. I hold my fingers outside the lever on longer range/ bench work, it adds to controlling the heavy trigger pull typically on these carbines.

If you have any other questions on the BLR for your list of nrrds, PM me, I'd be happy to share all types of stories on it.:)

As a starter rifle on a budget I would suggest the Stevens 200 in .308. Excellent round in a great gun for the money. Put a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 on it for $200 or under and you are in business. If you're lucky you could get the package for under $500 if you go used.
