I am looking to find a 25-06 reasonably priced... Unless some one has a better idea for a rifle. To shoot anything from a wood chuck to a deer... All suggestions are welcome... I am in oxford county... So I need. Smaller than a. 275 call.

243 Win, 257 Roberts, 6mm Rem, 250 Savage, there are many to choose from for chucks to deer, myself I would probably go 6mm Rem or 257 Roberts, but thats my preference, not saying they are superior.

Actually, I wouldn't mind a 220 swift or 22-250 for chucks to deer, the partition or TSX makes it quite effective on deer....

Find a nice rifle you like, and keep your mind open on the cartridge. There's quite a few that would fit that requirement. 243, 308, 30-06, 7-08, 6.5x55, 270, 7mm, 300mags.

The guys have you well covered here for good suggestions, just wanted to pitch in you're on the right track with .25 cal. It is likely the most useful bore on the gun rack if you're a casual hunter of varmints, predators, deer, and black bear. It is the same bore as 6.5/.264 (difference in bore diameters per side of the bullet is less than 1 sheet of paper, you can toss a 120gr .264" and a 120gr .257" bullet at a guy and nobody can tell you which is which) but with a slew of light weight varmint options you can push to 4,000fps in the .25-06 and mid-3000's to close to that in the .257 Roberts. It's less flashy than a 6.5 but a far better choice if you varmint and predator hunt, and a bit better on deer and bear than a .243, while staying the .243's equal as a varminter. I like .257 Roberts better than .25-06, but both are great, I like to burn a little less powder for a .25 than a .25-06 does just personal preference. If I was you I'd pick up a Ruger Hawkeye in .257 Roberts.

I am trying to stay away from 22-250. They are flat shooters. But I have heard that the barrel burns out faster... And on the extreme. I may try piping a moose... But I have to stay below a .275...

I'm just down the road, had the same decision a couple years ago with the under .275 but still useful caliber. I went with the .260 and love the caliber. I also agree with Ardent and look at a Ruger Hawkeye in what ever chamber you end up picking.

260 rem is right in there ........ buy the way a 270 measures in at .277 might not want to not be the one who has to argue that one out in court...

Even if effective and very possible, I can't see much chuck hunting with a 270 or 25-06 myself... it would work, but why use a rifle that is even effective on moose?
