hey iv been backpacking with my 44 mag for a while but want to get a nice 223! budget would probably be 500 to 650. i really want a cz 527 but i dont have 800 to spend.
thanks!

I'd save up a bit longer and get the CZ. I have a 527 Varmint Kevlar and it is an awesome little rifle. Super accurate and well made. It is a little heavy and long for a backpacking rifle and I've been seriously thinking of getting the 527 Carbine in either .223 or 7.62x39. It would be nice to have a small .223 to strap on the back while out shed hunting in case a coyote shows up.

Try to find a Model Seven in 223.

I had a 223AI built in a 700 Mountain rifle s/a configuration. Topped with a VXII 2x7, it's a very nice carry.

Buy an old Stevens/Savage 110 cheap, Short Action, order a short barrel,
Sell the old barrel for 50-$100. You can research, but I think you can do it well within your budget. Or let a gunsmith do it for you. Still should be close to budget.

I really don't know what you want to do with the rifle or what other features you want besides packability but... two rifles come to mind.

The H&R Handi-Rifle Superlight Compact... $270, 22" barrel but only a 33" OAL and 5.13 lbs

or

The Kel Tec Su16... just a little over your budget, but it's non-res, light and folds in half.

If the LOP is too short on the handi rifle, there are longer LOP models too that weigh around 7lbs

I'd go with the Handi rifle.

I have one in .243 and love its simple function, ease of cleaning and that it's easy to pack around the woods.

I'm hoping to bring another one home soon in 45/70. :)

Used models over here fetch between 250 and 350, I recently rebarrelled one for a customer, I'm looking at 5 of them all different and 2 are .223 on Holts auctions site at the moment.

Had a Baikal single shot in .223, bought it directly from the Canadian Baikal site for 300.00. Ideal back packing gun, breaks down really small, really quick, and a lot of fun to shoot,

I'm also looking for the same thing, Kel-tec SU-16 is leading choice right now due to its folding stock.
Non folding rifle has me looking toward the Rem pump 7615.

I came here to say this! But I guess you own it so kudos. But who in their right mind would sell their survival gun? Are you terminally ill?

It's not my survival gun.... I have a boito backpacker in .410 that fits in a pack much better.... I would never suggest anyone have a survival gun that doesn't have iron sights on it.....
