I've been having a lot of fun target shooting with my pistol but I'm thinking about giving trap and skeet shooting a try. Can anyone recommend a decent shotgun for a beginner that's easy on the wallet (ie. < $400)? I'm looking for a good value - a decent shotgun and a good price.

Also, I've Googled the subject a bit, but any suggestions on websites to visit to get a better idea of the sport? I know the guys at my club will give me a hand, but I'd like to study a bit more beforehand. Thanks!

For a budget of $400., you could do a lot worse than a Mossberg combo:

With a budget of $400., that is what I'd suggest.

Check out the Winchester 1300 Defender or Remington Marine Magnum.

You should be able to find a used one of either for under $400.00. Even new price, isn't much more than you were looking to spend, and either of them are well worth their asking price. Both come stock with an extended tube magazine.

Both are good defensive guns, but not really well suited for trap/skeet shooting.

You really can't go wrong with a Remington 870. The most widely sold shotgun in the world so there are about a bazillion parts available for it. Even if you did pick one up with a shorter barrel, you could easily find a longer one for trap/skeet.

If he want s to shoot trap and skeet he is gonna need a decent length barrel. I would go with the Mossberg Maverick Field. I bought one a year ago and have fired thousads of rounds through her without a hitch. I shoot trap alot, and love it, and it is great for birds as well. Later when you decide to upgrade to something like an over under then you can just chop the barrel, and ad a folding stock and have a great defece/tactical/fun gun. I paid 200 bucks for mine and have no complaints at all.

I picked up a used Stoeger 2000 semi on the EE and love it. Been through several hundred rounds shooting clays in the sandpit and hunting geese, ducks and grouse.

Remington 870. Whichever you get, by 9 or so rounds of training ammo, something like Snap Caps or something similiar and practice loading and unloading, loading between shots, and clearing common jams etc is a really good idea. Practice loading and unloading with your weak hand

for example..... KaPlow!!! then rack the action, engage the safety, and reload is a good sequence to practice..

Personally I'm a big 870 wingmaster fan. You can probably find a nice used one on the EE within your budget. If you want something with a real sift recoil then a Rem 1100 might be another option. Both the 870 & 1100 have been around forever, are proven designs and parts are no problem!
