I need a good bolt action rifle for hunting Deer/Moose/Bear in Ontario. I am going to be picking 30/06 for these duties, but the make and model is up in the air. I wanna learn how to shoot properly so some nice open sights would come in handy!! Hooded front and ramp adjustable rear type of thing.

Is there new Mauser action rifles that would fit my needs?? Or would another action do a better job?? What is a Mauser, I have heard they are the cadilac of bolt actions?? Accuracy and smoothness are desired!!

You might tell us what price range you wish to stay within, and if you plan on scoping it now or in the future. Some people use see through scope rings to maintain the ability to use both open sights and a scope at the same time.
I am not sure as to the ability to get a decent scope alignment having it mounted so high over the barrel. But tell us if having a removable magazine it important to you, or do you want a no fuss internal box magazine. Is stainless steel appealing to you or, do you like the traditional appeal of blued steel? Do you like Walnut wood, synthetic stocks? Super strong fibreglass (not always the prettiest but super strong)? Laminated wood, pretty and strong. Answering some of these will help people suggest what they think will serve your purposes best. There are tons of knowledgable people here waiting to help a new hunter do his job best!!!!

ok..

Lets keep it under $1000 (new or used)
Dont care if magazine or internal
I like walnut and blued
Maybe a scope down the road, but I wanna shoot open sights first
Could be walking alot so under 9lbs would be great!!

Open sights? The Remington Model 700 BDL.....$769.95 at Wholesale Sports. Not a true Mauser-style action, it's a push-feed. Great reputation for smoothness, dependability and accuracy. Good looking rifle in the opinion of some, myself included. Adjustable trigger, as well. Lots of aftermarket stuff available. The 700 CDL is prettier, IMHO, but costs more, and has no iron sights; very few bolt rifles are offered with sights these days compared to even 20 years ago.
If they chambered it in .280 or .257 Roberts I'd have one already. I've tried out a friend's BDL in .308 Winchester, and it is a SWEET hunting rifle. One of the best deals out there right now.

The used market is teeming with just what you want, so go to a couple of gun shows and pick one out!
Good on you wanting to use iron sights, but a good aperature (peep) is by far the best iron sight. Remember, your world famous Winchester Model 70 used to come drilled and tapped to just bolt on a Lyman 48 aperature sight.
The hood over the front sight mainly for target shooting, to keep the sun from shining on the front sight. For hunting I find it a bit of a distraction and have usually taken it.

Hello Nechako...you are right, they are addictive aren't they.
Mike picked one(ZG47) up recently from Tradeex and I for one am looking forward to him posting some pictures on here......hint, hint...Mike.

Adjustable trigger??

I need to know more about these Husqvarna M96 and 98 rifles.. Are they actual M98 Mauser actions from WW2 era built with new sporter stocks?? WHat is the Husqvarna 1600 series rifle and is it better than the 98?? Do they have adjustable triggers, if not how heavy are they typically??

Look...enough of all this pussy-footing about, the answer to all of your inexpensive Mauser actioned dreams is Tradeex.

Sally forth and indulge yourself....you won't regret it.

POST PIC'S.

Yes but...

Yes I really like what im seeing at Teadeex, my problem is I dont know anything about Mauser action rifles. I see Husqvarna rifles like the M96, M98 and 1600. For around $500 what is the best model to look at? Is the M98 or the 1600 a better rifle? Is the M98 and 1600 drilled for scope mounts?? Are there any other makes worth looking at for $300-$600??

I see that the 1600 is chambered for 30-06 but not military rounds like 8X57 or 9.3X57 like the M98 is. What is the best choice for a casual hunter that doesnt reload? Can you buy hunting rounds in 8X57 and 9.3X57?? What is the better round for Deer/Moose/Bear?? Is the FN action the action used by the Axis power in WW2?? Can you scope a M98 due to the rear safety and bold handle??

Please answer as many as you can, thanks

Should you have your heart and wallet set on a Husqvarna then I would suggest either a 98 or a 1600 in either 8x57 or 30-06 as both in either cartridge will suffice for a lifetime of hunting.....I personally would give the 96 a miss.
However the pick of the lot are the ZG 47's or if you are prepared to wait and watch for the ultimate fulfillment of your dreams, Tradeex does occasionally offer Brno Model 21's....and nothing on Gods green earth is better at providing sheer unadulterated, honest-to-God hunting pleasure.

As an aside, if Tradeex operated in Australia they would have zero stock left, for the prices are almost unbelievably cheap for such quality arms.....in particular, the Brno's.
