Hey everyone. My teenaged son has expressed a bunch of interest in Winchester rifles, particularly levers, although I have a Mod 70 and a Winchester P-14 that interest him as well. I’m wondering if there is a book out there that blankets most of the Winchester rifles and their history that would be a good base of information for his interest in these rifles? I’d love it if he had a good base of knowledge before his 18th and ability to get his own PAL and his start into collecting on his own. Any suggestions? He’s hunting now with his Great Grandpa’s 94 SRC in 38-55, so that’s the one that has really peaked his interest.

The Winchester Book by George Madis has long been considered the Bible for Winchesters. Though some information in it is in error. It covers all models and has dozens of photos of many special order guns. As well as chapters on sights and accessories etc. Other newer books are available but are devoted to particular models. Arthur Pirkles handbooks which each cover two rifle models are good as well.

You will find that your P14 was made by Winchester factory, but designed at Enfield Armoury in England - nearly identical rifles were also made by Eddystone and Remington factories - not precisely the same, but close. Some few months after that production run was done, they started to make Model of 1917 for the USA Military - same three factories. This is the reference book that I mainly use, for those:

I have not found decent books specifically about P14 - most books seem to be about the USA M1917, which pretty much have to discuss P13 and then P14 to explain how the m1917 came to be.

Thanks a ton for the suggestions. I found him a copy of ‘Winchester An American Legend’ and ordered it for him. Now fingers crossed this postal strike ends…
