Now I have heard that due to small case capacity 100gr and larger Barnes bullets may not expand very well past 100 yards.
I am wondering what weight and brand of heavier than 100gr bullet you fellas think might work well in a savage american classic bolt gun. I have some 120gr Grand Slams wonder how they would do? FS

i use 95 gr partition in my 243 ,, i think its very similiar ,, the 105 gr bulet leaves a pretty skinny wound ,, so i go for the velocity with th biggest bullet that will go 2900 fps ,, works in my 243 ,i am not a fan of the copper noslers in my gun ,,wade

I know you specified "heavier than 100grs" but I've had textbook expansion at 300 yards on Wt's with 12" penetration using 100gr Partitions and a stiff dose of Win 760 out of a Rem 700 classic in .250 No matter what bullet you use in either a .243 or .250 you won't be getting a large wound channel. All the deer I've shot dropped within sight range.Dead is dead.............Harold

I have taken 3 mule deer with my short-barreled 250 using the 117 grain Accubond launched at a modest 2550 fps at ranges out to ~200 yards with no problems. All have been complete pass-through with plenty of "lung-soup" produced. None required a second shot.

Hey there I have A ruger ultra light in 250 savage and it loves 115 gr Barnes tipped triple shocks with Win 760 powder also 110 Nosler Accubonds. I have used alot of Barnes bullets and all have done there job from 10 yards out to 300.All have expanded by the exit hole.

I've had very good performance with the 100 gr Speer bullet on deer. If you want a heavier bullet that will open up ,I suggest you try the 117 gr Hornady.

With a 10" twist barrel, your Grand Slams would be devastating for sure. You could also load Sierra 120 Gr HPBT at 2500 to 2600 fps and would get great expansion at & maybe a little more accuracy too. Hornady's 117 Gr SST has a higher Ballistic Coeficient & is no doubt accurate too and will also provide great expansion at lower velocities.
Good luck

Before you start loading heavier/longer bullets into that Savage, you need to determine the twist rate of your barrel.

If it's to slow, maybe 1-12 to 1-14, as many of them are, it's likely they won't stabilize bullets heavier than 100 grains. If you have a 1-10 twist rate or faster, no problem, right up to 125 grains.

The rifle is a brand new 114 American Classic with a 1-10 twist, so we can load anything. I have lots of Win 760 powder. I have 110gr Accubond, 117gr Horn,. I have loaded 75 hp, 87gr TNT and 100gr Sierra and in each load the one with the most powder shot the smallest group. Powders I have tried so far is 4064 with 75gr, R15 with 87gr and Varget with 100gr. Looking forward to loading some bigger bullets, thanks lads. FS

I've got 2 250-3000's. 6-257's total.

I like the vanilla 100 grain Hornady or 100 Nosler BT in 250 or 257 Roberts.

Bigger 25's I typically go with a 110 Accubond or 115 BT.

As much as I don't drink the Barnes Kool-Aid I think the 80 grain TTSX might be worth trying out.

I use 117gr interlocks in 2506. Work greaat. I'd like to try 120gr partitions and A frames but they're expensive. Swift sirocco2's would be a great choice for the slower 257s

Back when I had a .250 ( going to go have a good cry after I finish typing this because I don't have it anymore) I had good luck with 100 & 115 Noslers, and 117 Hornadys. The Hornady's shot well enough, but I had some come apart at close range on deer and switched to Noslers after that.

I could never get the Barnes X to shoot... they would go through the paper sideways when I could get them on target at all.

The 117 Hornady Roundnose was my go-to heavy bullet when I loaded for a 1-10" 250 Savage. Win 760 drove them accurately and fast. Killed three deer with them, two at over 250 steps away, and they worked very well. Most people will tell you round nose bullets are no good at ranges over 150 yds or so. Don't believe it!
