Hi Guys

Finally have the opportunity for a moose hunt this fall and would like to know where you take yours for butchering. Now before you start giving me recommendations about doing it myself I live in an apartment where it just wouldn't be practical. Anyone know a good place in the Hamilton Ontario area?

there is a good guy up in Copetown who did a deer for me about 8 years ago, good setup and you help him do it. Stop in at Al Simmons gun shop or call them. he use to have cards sitting there or PM me later and I will try and remember to find the card

I don't know what you speak of :) but it would be much easier to pack out.
Plus you don't have to pay for a bunch of packaged meat you don't really want.
And you can't beat bottled moose meat.:)

It is easier to pack out....but canning anything I get other than salmon is not my preferred method.

One best have a whole lotta quart bottle at the ready after cutting that tag ;)

Not sure what you mean by that.
I suggested a better option than a butcher.IMO.
I think it would be much easier to do the bottling at home as well.

In 6 months or so that frozen moose won't taste half as good as the bottled moose.

Go to a reputable butcher...I sent a friend to a guy I knew who actually had a nice butcher shop set up for his own farm ..my friend payed him,to cut wrap and freeze his moose ..even gave him a tip....but when he opened his box of meat ,the only 'steaks' were shank steaks ,every choice cut had been removed..I suspect the guys nere do well son helped himself...but one thing for sure,I'll NEVER recommend anyone use him again...'word of mouth' works BOTH ways..

We cut our own,but it's a lot of work( my hunting partner is a South African and wanted to make his own biltong)

Also if you bring 4 quarters to the butcher at 100 lbs per. You're paying for the total weight , when you may only be getting 50% meat.
But it sure looks all neat and tidy :)

Hanson Meats in Cayuga, we take our beef, pigs and lambs there - great people to deal with.
Beef is $0.45/lb (pre-processed weight) cut and wrapped I expect Moose would be the same.
If I recall they do deer for a flat rate of $45 cut and wrapped.

Dan

OP, if you can't find any one that's good out your way, take it to Hometown Sausage in Pine Falls MB, it's worth the trip, believe me! Been going there for yrs and yrs!

EDIT: I just got back from there, dropped off 23 lbs of older vac-packed venison, should be ready in a week or so in the form of breakfast sausages.

Hey Rob, I've never had a moose more than 140 lb per quarter. So about 280 lbs of meat.
I've never bottled that much either.:)
I just think , cut a few nice steaks, a few chunks to cut fast fries off and the rest bottled, is the way to go.
Anyway that'll be my plan next year.

And Rob , if that's your comedy routine... Don't quit your day job..:)

My buddy has his own ginder?? For making ground meat, he's looking at getting a jerky cooker?? Lol.
All he needs now is a sausage maker and a meat saw.

Slap her on the kitchen table and grind away:)
