Good bye Duke

To hunter5425: I feel both your and your buddy's loss.
Been there too many times, and always makes this old Redneck's eyes water.
Stings like hell when it happens.
Far too young in this case.
Condolences all round.

To Byron whom I quoted.

If I might make a suggestion here: The best cure for a broken heart is Puppy Breath.
Out there somewhere is a soul searching for the kind of love only you can bring.
Never a replacement, but it certainly helps with the healing aspect.

We lost Kimmiq just a short time ago.
Not a day goes by without me wandering by her old pillow or kennel and the eyes tear up once again.
Placed her ashes in her urn the other day, and wept like a baby when doing so.

And as sad as that all is, the new pup that entered our lives has completely captured our hearts and in doing so has indeed backed the pain of loss off to a large degree.

So Folks, please do consider opening your hearts to another.
It will help you, and every single one of them deserves a happy and loving home.

Good words nog. Thanks for that.
Damn this thread!! Why am I crying at 10pm

Keep them off the road. Learned that years ago with a multi thousand dollar leg repair to ours.

It’s crazy how much money can be saved and heartache prevented with a just a simple rope or $2 leash.

Hopefully the owner learned his lesson about controlling animals and paid for any vehicle damage for his error in judgement.

Poor dog.

Well hopefully we can all aspire to be as perfect as you. Now back to the original program!!

So very sorry to hear about the pup.
Terrible thing to have to deal with , for sure.
A friend once said that the worst thing about owning a dog is the danged things just don't live long enough .
To lose one before their time for any circumstance however, is double the heart break!

You either know absolutely nothing about hunting dogs or just feel the need to be completely inappropriate in any given situation.

A bird dog would rather be dead than walked on a leash. They need to run daily and it sounds like this pup was in a good home. Bird dogs are driven and the best ones are stubborn when it comes to doing what they love. For the first few years they are often unpredictable and unfortunately accidents happen. It is maddening and heart breaking regardless of the circumstances and we don't need help reliving every second for another reason to blame ourselves.

Here is an interesting stat. A child pedestrian is killed or injured nearly every three hours in Canada. That adds up to 30-40 deaths and thousands of injuries annually. Perhaps you should point out to the grieving parents the exact error of their ways and explain to them the damage children are doing to motor vehicles.

To the OP, please pass along my condolences to your friend. I have been fortunate enough to have spent the last 50 years with a dozen or so wonderful bird dogs. Some left much too soon and every one broke my heart. It's the deal we make when we bring them home and considering the alternative I think it is one of the best deals a man is offered in this life.

He was being exercised on a rural road with little traffic , but one careless driver ended his life. I run my dogs on a rural road and almost everyone slows down when they see a dog in a field, but there are those who don't either through ignorance or malice. There are no absolute risk free areas to exercise a hunting dog.
I live on a farm and lost my Brit Toby the same way a careless speeding idiot. Back then if we saw 2 cars a day that was heavy traffic now with all the townies moving in it has become a speedway. It was always common courtesy to slow down or stop and pull to the left with walkers people on horses bikes etc. Speeders need a leash more so than a good dog.

My friends 1 1/2 year old pup Duke got killed by a car while he was going for a walk on a country road . My friend is torn up and my eyes got a little watery as well . He was a rambunctious friendly little guy who had just begun his hunting career. He is the one on my right ( pictures left).
