Good carry pistol

I'm looking for a good carry pistol and thought I'd see what people's opinions are on the site. Calibre will probably .44 rem mag, but am open to other possibilites.

Criteria would be:
1. Not huge
2. 'Reasonably' well behaved re:recoil
3. Resistant to adverse weather conditions
4. Double action revolver or semi-automatic
5. Reliable
6. Last but not least, affordable.

Any suggestions?
 
If you are looking for a "Bear Gun" Stainless Ruger Redhawk 4 5/8" in 44 Mag. If you roll you own .45 Colt is also a good choice.

Yeah the .45 with the 45-08 brass looks pretty good, but I don't reload so that would be an issue.
 
I've found after many years that a 4" 29 or 629 S&W is the best balance for size and power. You can shove it in a Bianchi UM84R flap holster and it stays covered and can be attached to belts, packs, etc.

6-1/2" and 8-3/8" 29's can be had used for $500-550 here all the time, If your not 12(6), then get one cut to 106mm

If you are sensitive to recoil, then a redhawk would be a better choice but is a considerably larger gun
 
Why dont you carry a glock?
Might not have the most stopping power for bears, but its comfortable, accurate, and easy to maintain. Its also light weight with a dual action trigger and that weird double triggerly thing that makes it real safe to draw and shoot incase a bear wants to eat you :|
 
Yeah I know, but that .460 S&W round will put out about 65,000 lb/ps pressure.. According to S&W this ought to be daddy of them all. Most powerful Handgun in the world, heard that before :)

Sure would cure a bear problem !
 
.44 mag, not huge, and good under recoil...kind of a contradiction.

I'm thinking 1911 frame, norinco or mil surp
rebarreled in .45 super or .460 roland (will run .45 acp also)
if recoil is too much get it compensated

A happy medium to the criteria
 
The thing that is good about the 44mag is that if you are not a reloader you have an extremely diverse selection of ammo available for it.

If I wanted to get a gun like you are describing I would go with a s/s 6" 629 44mag and shoot 240gr JHP bullets and when you get accustomed to the recoil possibly move up to heavier weight bullets.

I bought an older used one in excellent condition for $500.00 from an estate sale.

This gun is extremely balanced and I am able to shoot it very fast and accurately with my top 240gr loads.

If concealability is an issue then I would recommend a 1911 style 10mm semi-auto or Armco's 45-08 conversion set up.
 
The great thing I see in .45acp is that you can shoot cheaper practice ammo and save the heavy stuff for the bush, although I no expert in this subject, but I would lean to anything that can shoot .45acp as well.
