I use Hoppes No. 9 and Break Free to clean my handguns and rifles. My family members do not like the smell. Is that any good solvent with better smell ? Thanks.

+1. Hoppes #9 smells pretty foul to me too. Have you tried Ballistol? It can be expensive, but it seems to do the job and smells like licorice (to me anyway).

 How DARE you! :p :p

What can I say? My dad has has used Ballistol for as long as I can remember. There was always a lingering scent in the gunroom, and it reminds me of home.

Try the new Hoppe's products...cleaner, bore cleaner and copper remover.
All are low fume, but sure as hell don't clean as well as the more toxic stuff.

Hoppes Elite is M-Pro 7. This cleaner is not designed to remove copper fouling from rifles. It does a good job of powder and low velocity (handgun) lead as long as the lead is not too thick. It takes some soaking though.

But I also miss that No. 9 fragrance.

Ed's Red for me. Any solvent that will dissolve gun gunk will have a smell. Women are always sensitive to solvent smells, so ventilation is best.

Remington bore cleaner is good. No smell and cleans good. There is also JB bore cleaner. It is a gritty past. When you think things are clean use that and the patch will come out black.

+1 Ever since I've gone to Ballistol I won't go back - plus its healthy! ;)

Anyone tried "Borescrubber"? I believe it's made by Gunslick but I'm not sure. This is a foaming bore cleaner that appears to do a good job without a lot of elbow grease. Maybe I'm just lazy but anything to make cleaning easier is great for me. They also make "Gunscrubber" which is a general cleaner. TC
