Looking for some ammo for my SKS for deer hunting. Going for my CORE next week and want to get some ammo and make sure it shoots well and im proficient with it long before season opens in sept thus the early start looking for ammo.

I know the SKS may not be ideal hunting firearm but im sure it will work just fine, i have a really good specimen i picked up from corwin arms a few years ago that has not shot over 3MOA with any surplus ammo so far(ive shot Chinese, Czech, russian) , usually in the 1.5-2MOA range, should be good enough for deer at the less than the 150 yards distance i will likely be shooting here in BC. And im not rich enough yet to buy a dedicated Deer rifle.

Dont want to reload as the SKS really beats up the brass badly.

So what good commercial hunting ammo is available in 7.62x39mm? Want to pick up a few hundred rounds and get this SKS dialed in with it and then ill leave this rifle/ammo combo alone for my deer rifle until such time as i can afford a replacement. Ive got 2 other SKS(that both shoot 3-7MOA lol) to beat up target shooting ill leave this good one for my deer rifle for now.

Thanks guys.

A buddies daughter shot two deer with a CZ 527 and Ukrainian /Dominion HP ammo Canada Ammo was selling...I use my own handloads....Harold

Ive only ever seen Barnaul soft points but cant attest to their quality. MFS makes some for the 54r they may make for the 39.

those soft points are expensive compared to the hollow points
i have always wanted to try the soft points but the dont seem to be readily available locally to me

Hornady 123 gr sst steel case #8078, 50 rounds for $45. Good for mule deer to at least 235 yards, my 13 year old has taken whitetail and muleys with it, one shot, great expansion, good to great accuracy in his CZ 527.
Cheers!

S&B SP 123gr Canadaammo and SFRC have this ammo in stock. I have shot this and Barnaul from an SKS and the S&B shot a 3 inch group with irons with 5 shots. I didn't want to waste too much of this ammo. Waiting for my CZ to arrive for that.

I found the lead on the tips of the Barnaul SP were easily gauled by the action of the SKS when removing rounds to exit your stand, climb/cross something etc.... I had to discard several rounds unused because the tips were warped beyond where I would trust their flight path.
