Good compact scope

Due to a number of factors, including not being able to use open sights anymore-I have to use a scope-I would like some opinions on a compact scope for my K11 Swiss 7.5x55.I bought the rifle already drilled and tapped with the mount[no idea what make or model] which is short,about 3 1/2'' '' long -but only 3/8 wide ,necessitating rings to fit .

I've looked at red dot scopes and holosights,but would be quite happy with a fixed 4 power compact-if I knew which one to get.The rifle will likely just be used for target shooting at ranges not exceeding 200 yards,I don't need an illuminated reticle-just a plain duplex type would be fine
 
The first thing that comes to mind is a Leupold M8-4x.
They show up on the Exchange regularly for around $200; they're bullet proof, the optics are good, and they have a lifetime warranty.
 
GOT 4 of them already-great scopes,but I was looking for something shorter because I have to have the rings fairly close together
 
I once mounted a NF 1-4x24 on a 223 with only one ring and it worked just fine, I would bet if you mount a leupold with the rings only 2 1/2-3 1/2 inches apart it would work great. you might run into more trouble if you drop the rifle on the scope than you will with recoil. Try it, not much to lose. Just because you haven't seen it done, doesn't mean it can't be.
 
That short mount length will also limit your ability to move the scope backward and forward to achieve proper eye relief. Ideally you should try the scope on the gun, or at least next to the gun, to ensure that the scope you choose can be mounted in a position that's comfortable for you.
 
My vote is for the older pre-Timberline Burris compacts. I have a couple in 3-9x32 and they are fantastic. The best eye relief that I've ever seen in any scope and they are rock solid and carry a lifetime warranty. A nice trim package for a lightweight rifle combo.
