good coyote calibre??

hey fella's i'm looking at getting into some coyote/wolf/lynx hunting and not sure at what calibre, i thought of putting 120 grains in my 300wsm or 3030, then i thought, here's my chance to buy a NEW gun, what have you guys had luck with???????
 
243 all the way. It has the power to take the large dogs at range. If all your shots are under 200yd then 223 etc, works well,but some dogs at 400 take a hard hit to keep them down. AJ
 
At close range, 100-200 yards there are lots, the 204, 222, 223

I used a 22-250 for most of my varmint hunting for years, until I started to get into the longer range game, and hunting started to be called SHOOTING AT past 400 yards. Now from 300 yards in the 22-250 is an awesome cartridge and always will be. But (strong) Winds like on an open lake or field is its nightmare at distance.

I switched to the 243 with 100 grain bullets. And now I still cant hit #### lol! No just kidding it helped a great deal with 35 km winds. It took a while to be able to read the wind on long range but what I did was set out clay birds at 100, 200, 300, 400 and just shoot until I could hit them and read the wind.
 
I've shot many coyote with a 223, most have ran a short ways from good vital hits.
Only a few dropped immediately.

All coyotes shot with a 243 have dropped dead for me. As I'm sure they would do with any larger than 243 cal, as well.

Havent heard about the 204 yet? Don't know for sure?.

I use a .22-250 only shot one yote and one fox last winter but both dropped dead in their tracks.

For bullets I use 55gr pointed soft points. The yote was quatering to me and the bullet broke its sholder and exited behind the rib cage on the opposite side lots of damage. I have herd stories of the lighter weight bullets blowing up on the hide or just not doing enough damage to make a quick ethical kill so thats why I went with the tried and true soft point.

Federal also makes a load using a 60gr nosler partition at 3500fps that sould cut down on wind drift and will have no issues taking even white tail under 250yds.
 
I really like the 22-250 for coyotes and I've taken a lot of them with it out to about 400 yards regularly, I use a 52 gr hollow point boat tail match bullet and Hogdon Varget in mine. Lately I've been using a 22 Hornet quite a bit when I'm walking around and expecting the shots to be inside of 200 yards. I've also once used a 458 Win mag and I must say the results were spectacular, ditto the 338 Win mag.
 
Mostly use the 223 in either a ruger bolt or the mini. Also use the 22-250 sometimes. Distance shooting I have made the longest with the 223. Currently on a 22 hornet kick and seem to work not bad for close in calling shots. 223 are the cheapiest and able to pick them up at walmart canadain tire compared to the swift. Believe the 22-250 can also be picked up at the listed stores but are more money.

Anything you can aford that makes you wish you had ear defenders on when you fire it. I'm going to use a 22-250,My buddy's going to use a 204 ruger.Before that I used a .303. The choises are endless.Find something that tickles your fansy and run with it.(Well you now what I mean)
 
If you want a real coyote caliber, look at the 17 Remington, or the 204 Ruger that is if you roll your own. If you dont get a boring 223 or 22-250....
 
I wouldnt want to shoot a lynx with a 243 or 25-06, but those are ideal for wolf. 17 rem/222/223 ideal for lynx - not as good for wolf

happy medium - 22-250 loaded with 55 grainers
