Went out yesterday (Sunday)morning and called for a while.Nothin.
So I decided to go for a drive and take a look around the neighborhood.
I came across a good sized coyote trotting across a neighbors field and got out to take a poke.He was movin pretty good by the time I was ready to go and I blew the shot....0 for 1
Set up in the late afternoon and got old Johnny Stewart playing different stuff and to my suprise 3 or 4 started singing 600 yards in the woods south of my location. These guys didnt want much to do with squeelin rabbits and rodents but they really liked the coyote pup distress call, and 3 of em came out to take a look.
After what seemed 10 minutes or so, they didnt want to close the gap so I took a poke at the largest guy of the 3 @ about 390yds......0 for 2 :(
I figured it was all over after watching these dogs head south at a good pace, until (what I'm pretty sure was a #####)started barking like a fool for about 5-6 minutes.I couldnt see her so I started the pup call again and out she came (and at a good clip too) to my right about 500 yds away.
I waited and played the call off and on while she kept moving to and fro. Anyway, with the light fading, I took a shot at her at around 425yds(ranging small tree's near her location).......
Well like I said "It was a good day for the coyotes Boney-0,Coyotes-3
Kills or no kills it was a pretty good day for me aswell! :)
BTW all of these coyotes were in very good shape (no mange)

You'll connect sooner or later. Good luck when you do get out... Your helping out the game animals in your area...

Cheers

what you shooting? Maby they werer hit but just ran away? I shot one off the deck buy the chicken house the other day with the 243, droped, started kicking, then got up and ran... but the dogs were let loose :) Looked like a clean chest shot.

JD,I am using a 22-250 (heavy barrel)with 60 grain Sierra HP.
I also thought I might have hit (at least)the last one I fired at because of the way she spun and took off,but there was no evidence of a hit.
Im pretty sure I had 3 clean misses.Time to start taking my 264 out for those longer shots beyond 400.(or a camera attached to my spotting scope)
Its like Bronco said,.............better than a day at work

I had some coyote excitement lately as well.

On Saturday afternoon after I got home at 4 my wife told me there was a coyote that crossed the field not more than 60 yards from the house an d1hour and a half earlier.

So I grab the .223 and a rabbit call and walk across the road to the barn. My 5 year old boy and 7 month Brit were with me. Not expecting much I started calling. It wasn't 3 minutes when I saw something moving about 500 meters below me at the bottom of the field. I quickly moved about 30 meters to lay across a round hay bail. There were two coyotes. One smaller one in the field and one huge charcoal/black bastard hanging back at the edge of the woods.

I had just sighted in my .223 the week before and knew very well where it was hitting. The small coyote was in a hollow and I couldn;t see him so i settled on the larger one standing there looking at me straight on. He was 400 meters away with about a 30 meter drop, dead calm. Perfect for the .22. I squeezed on him and he flipped backwards screaming like a stuck pig. The second takes off and I get a shot off on it but missed. It was dusk so I waited until the next day to track him. The next day I tracked him through the thickest #### I have ever seen. Tons of blood and he laid down 3 - 4 times. I lost daylight and then it snowed the next night without me finding him. When i stopped tailing he was dragging one leg quite hard and was stopping every 15 - 20 meters. He will won't be bothering the deer any longer.

Just got in:.......1st stand ,called,nothing,2nd stand, called, and one showed up in the bottom corner of the field (on edge of a swamp)a mere 235yds away.

You guessd it............0 for 4

I'm heading to the pit right now to get to the root cause of this problem, just came home to get a bite to eat.

Well I cleaned the rifle and went to the pit and took afew shots @200 yds.(off the hood of my truck using harris bi-pod)using the 22-250 with 60 g sierra Hp's over 39.6grains of win 760, wlr primer.

I dont really have any equipment excuses for missing 4 coyotes, but can say the rifle is zeroed a bit high(I thought it was around 1" high at 100)It turns out that it is almost 4" high @ 200(and a hair left) and I was aiming high on the dog this morning. here are some pics:
