Was over at a friends place yesterday for a visit in the evening and as we were on the front porch having a drink we heard a loud bleating noise from the front of the property heading to the road, one buddy was out that way and came back quick and said there was a spotted whitetail fawn stuck in the fenceline.

I grabbed a pair of wire cutters from my truck and ran out with another buddy, poor little guy was hung up by a back leg and had got twisted around. Definitely wasn’t getting loose on its own, my friend kept the fawn from moving around while I cut the wire and freed the hoof/leg. He’d been thrashing around for a bit and had some minor cuts and scrapes but I couldn’t feel anything broken or out of place as I checked the leg out and moved it through it’s range of motion, I let it go in the field but the deer dragged itself around unable to put weight on it’s back legs. So I grabbed it and supported it for 5-10 minutes till it started to regain some stability and use of its leg, must have been numb from hanging in the fence for who knows how long.

We saw a group of deer 15-20 minutes running along the fenceline and I figured it was part of that group, once it looked like it was able to support itself we lifted it over the fence and it was able to run off on its own pretty well. Hopefully the little bugger is alright and didn’t do any serious damage to its leg, glad we were there and able to help get it out of a jam. Cute little thing, I was surprised at how light it was when I picked it up but I’m used to our fat goats that are of similar size and height.

I did that for a black bear cub a couple of years ago, the poor little guy was all bundled up in a loose coil of barbed wire. After the dogs discovered him, a bit of excitement there, lol, I had to go home, leave the dogs and get my wire pliers. The mom seemed to know I was trying to help and didn't get too worked up about me being close to her cub, she just paced around about 10yds away and moaned a bunch. She did know me somewhat as we ran into her and her babies a lot on our walks before and after the incident.

Good on you. I'm a Softy too that way.
Wish there were more folks who would think that way too.

Good for you, that must have been a bit nerve wracking. Although animals are pretty smart, they know when your helping them out. Feels good to be able to get one out of a jam when they’re unable to get themselves out.

I’ll always try and help an animal out in a situation like that, unfortunately I’ve also had to put one or two out of their misery when there no other option. It sucks but I’d rather make it a quick one than see them writhing in pain on the side of he road...

When I was a teen I saw a group of deer in a residential area panicking with one yearling getting a rear leg wrapped between the top and middle wire.Ran over and pulled the wires open then away it went none the worse for wear.

I cut one out of a fence here on the farm last year.

Poor bugger got twisted in the top two strands, and locked in by his back legs. Basically got his hind leg caught on the second strand from the top, and as he went over, it wrapped him up.
He wasn't in much shape as I found him, while I was walking my dogs around the pond.

Couple minutes with the Leatherman tool (what did we do before these came along?), and got the dude free and on his gimpy legs again.

Figure he recovered OK, or the coyotes ate well, but he seemed pretty solid when I last saw him...

I would guess that a lot more of them end up stuck in wires than most folks would have figured.

Good on Butcherbill for assisting an animal in distress. All I did yesterday was move a caterpillar from the middle of a busy hiking trail so it didn't get stepped on, which isn't nearly as good of a story!

And good on the #### guy too! He's never getting that smell out of his truck though! Lol

My one friend decided to drive his car behind the barn at another friend's dairy farm and got stuck in the mud/poop gumbo back there. That car was never the same after that...
