It would have made more sense to just move the cannelure forward on the bullet to keep the same OAL...

The cannelure is already as far forward as it can go. With a full length case, the case lip is above the ogive of the bullet, hence the shorter case.

Wished I had read this thread before I bought 3 boxes of the Hornady FTX 325gn bullets. Tried to load today in regular length brass and found that to stay at 2.550" COL the edge of the case was way up the ogive. So far up they won't feed reliably through my Marlin. Now going to EE.
