I just bought my first 308 rifle (Tikka T3x CTR). I still haven't bought any ammo for it and since I already reload 9mm and 223 I would also like to start reloading 308 but first I thought I should purchase some good factory ammo to take the rifle to the range for the first time and test it's accuracy.

What high quality match ammo would you guys suggest I purchase to test it? I also would like to buy some ammo that falls into the medium category and cheap plinking ammo. Just to test how the accuracy changes with the quality of the ammo.

Tikka T3x CTR
Barrel length: 20" 1:11" twist rate

Any suggestions on maybe 3 (high, medium, low quality) ammo boxes?

Many Thanks!

I haven’t bought factory ammo for many years...but among the best was Federal Gold Medal loaded with 168gr Sierra Match Kings. Perhaps it is now called Federal Premium?

The Federal as mentioned is pretty good, I don't buy factory premium ammo much so can't suggest another but as far as plinking ammo I've had good luck with Prvi and Lake City, which also provide decent brass for reloading. I have had great loads with Lapua's brass and Sierra Matchkings plus Berger 155.5's. All depends on what you are loading for of course, hunting or targets.

The hornady match 155gr that the dcra brings is shoots good. I shot mixed lots of the same Ammo in Guyana, and my krieger barrel loves it.

If you are going to get dies, i would buy Lapua from Hirsch, and save the brass IMO.

I second buying Lapua Match and then you have good brass - Much cheaper in the long run. Site sponsors sell it here, it is close in price to FGMM.

Lapua ammo Scenar 155 gr and Lockbase 170 gr, there is nothing better, i order from Hirsh precision.

Get a box of 168 grain .308 Federal Gold Medal Match used by LE world wide for testing your rifles inherent accuracy.

The brass for reloading, not so great.

My older Tikka Tactical 308 loves Hornady match 155 Amax and the 155 ELD-M. The brass is okay after you have shot it in your rifle, but that particular rifle I don't reload for because the factory ammo runs so good in it and I shoot it so little I can't be bothered to take the time to work up a load for it. For a lower price factory ammo you can look at Hornady American Gunner, they offer 50 packs with the 155 BTHP for about $70 I think and it has shot well for me too.

My 308 CTR stainless likes. Hornady 168 bthp match (2600fps), lapua 170 lockbase and 175gr Sierra Fed Match. Even shoots Hornady steel match 155 bthp well but very slow at ~2490fps.
