Good first rifle for targets/small game.

I started with a .223 when I got my first rifle. I took a Tikka heavy barrel and never regretted it. It costs more to shoot than a .22lr, but it is also more accurate and hits out farther.

P.S. Once you buy your first gun is all down hill from there... I now own 4 and its been less than a year. haha.

My first rifle was the ruger mini14 target in 223. I love it but am now looking to buy a 22
Actually 2 .22's a browning buckmark (pistol) and some type of bolt for taking small game. I've been shooting steady and have never fired a round through a bolt gun and that makes me sad. that's why i am going with a bolt .22

Though marginal for deer, many have been taken with this caliber. If you are into shooting targets and plan on shooting a fair amount, then the .17 ammo is expensive, For critter shooting like I do each year, it is extremely too costly. The .223 can be reloaded easily and a great load developed so it shoots incredible. But the .22LR is the way to go for cheap yet can be accurate target shooting as well as some critter eradication. No need for an expensive rifle as many older models such as Anschutz , Mossberg, and Marlin can SHOOT just like the big expensive ones. I prefer my 1940 Marlin 81 over all I have gathered but a very close second is a 1960s Mossberg 144lsb. Both about $200 and well worth the funds. The important thing is to enjoy the sport.
