Good for hunting but not for range?

My understanding of the apparent zero steel rule at some ranges is that it's a fire hazard. I know TSE has had two or more fires they blamed on use of ammunition with whatever steel component. Shooting x39 in low or no light against sturdy targets shows the concern is completely justified...

Pat - What Range ?? Also not around 'your corner'. Is this a Provincial Reg or just a "Range Rule" ? My range is 'out in the boonies' and has no such reg - in NB.

How is soft point a hard crushing tip?

From the Quebec hunting regulations:pROHIBITED. I assume non-flattening means non expanding.

That thin jacket will mushroom, same with the soft point. Noticed how easy it was to squeeze it with pliers? As the bullet is 80% lead, so I cannot see how a lead tip is a non flattening tip. He is just a broken record and is wrong about this.

Every province has it's own rules. I still find it strange that no where in the Ontario Hunting regs does it forbid non expanding centre fire ammo for hunting. Now you can correct me if I am wrong as that was the last time I checked ...awhile ago. Has it changed or have I been reading the regs wrong? Not that I recommend non expanding ammo , just to be informed.

And we've established that these bullets have exposed lead tip, which will certainly flatten, and that their jackets are made from mild material which will not inhibit expansion, so the OP's bullets are legal for hunting.

I am not too concerned with the hunting aspect as there is not a hope in hell that some ballistics engineer will check my deer carcass or ammo stash while I am on the hunt. I am concerned if the range will continue to uphold their prohibition to use this type of ammo on their range because that's where most of my ammo is shot.

and who told you that? please advise.

In the case of The Shooting Edge, the manager at the time. A piece of mild steel traveling at thousands of feet per second is going to create a ton of sparks when it hits a piece of hardened steel, or anything sturdy really. I'm guessing that is a surprise to you since you even bothered to ask.

Guide de chasse Gouv du Qc.
Prohibited : des balles traçantes et des balles à pointe dure de type militaire et à bout non écrasant;
Answer: no, you cannot hunt with those if bullet jacket is steel.

Sorry my French is abysmal but the second line appears to talk about military ball? A soft point is NOT a military projectile. Soft point projectiles are specifically designed for hunting.

No they are not. Why should we listen to you? You cannot admit that you have idiots at your club that you allow to shoot the baffles, as long as they dont use steel core to damage your precious baffles. Penetrator is armor piercing. I have a steel target I'm looking at, that was shot by 303 soft points and Hinterberg FMJ that guess what damaged it more? If steel jacket was a penetrator, it would cause more damage. But it didn't. So there is real world science.

A friend shot one of my Cabelas steel plates with a 7mm WSM at 100yds and the fricken thing punched several perfectly round holes clear through the plate. :( Pretty sure nobody makes AP 7WSM.

Don’t worry janeau will be along shortly to school you on Ontario’s ammo hunting and range regs.

Probably not the highest quality steel then, I’ve shot my ar500 plates with 300wsm with no cratering and I’m pretty sure my buddy hit it with his 338 lapua but I could be remembering it wrong.
