I don't admit it often, but I am a teacher.

I have a nice pile of money to spend on books for my class library (grade 9) and I have a pile of hunters here. I want to buy some good hunting books, ideally I would like "how to hunt ....(moose, wt, mulie etc)", but if it is a good read about hunting I would like to know about it.

I have some in my library, but boys they are hard to find. The big names (Chapters, Coles) don't touch hunting books anymore and I live in the north so I am ordering online.

Does anyone know a good online resource for this type of book. So much cheaper for me to order from one store and save shipping.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try Stackpole Books under their 'Outdoor Sports" heading. Lots of hunting and related books there. Just search for 'Stackpole Books' with Google.

i recently brought a couple of wild game and fish cookbooks off the shelf at canadian tire, i recall about 8 to 10 different titles - hunting and fishing.

they are hard cover, about $23.00 or so each before tax.

creative publishing international www.creativepub.com

decent books for the price. imho

I used to get one of those creative outdoor book a year for christmas when I was little. They are pretty good, and sometimes they update with new ones like advance bass fishing and the one with the whitetail tips.

Otherwise, there are also lots of interesting books about safaris that I found interesting for adventure type read. I think one was called "Lost horizon"?? i read a few times at the libary until they decided that they no longer have hunting books in the public libary anymore.

I have checked out all kinds from my local library. Most of them are mediocre, but I have one right here that is great. It is called successful duck hunting by M.D. Johnson. ISBN: 0-87349-215-3

There are lots of others I have checked out, but I don't recall the titles. The internet is a good resource to find information about hunting and other topics, but libraries are still a great one. Nice to hear you are helping build yours.

Good luck with your search!

I collect those from both the hunting and fishing line up. :)

Two of my favorites are titled "The Duck Hunters Book" and The Deer Hunter Book"

Neither are really what I would call how to, but are full of old stories from days gone by. I picked both of them up at Chapters here in town.

Look for the Jim Corbett books!

Went through my outdoor library, so here is a sample of what is out there. Must confess that the vast majority were bought at garage sales, so that is a source to consider.

Big Game Hunting, Elmer Keith
Hunting Secrets of the Experts, Vlad Evanoff
Sportsman's Encyclopedia
Deer and Deer Hunting, Robert Wegner
Whitetail, George Mattis
Hunting in the West, Mike Crammon
Big Game Hunting in the West, Mike Crammond
Camp and Trail, Stewart Edward White
The Blazed Trail, Stewart Edward White
The Experts Book of the shooting Sports, edited by David E. Petzal
Deer Hunting with Dalrymple, by Byron W. Dalrymple

The best of Nash Buckingham
The Hunters Bible, by W.N. Merrill
Deer Hunting, by Norman Strung
The Deer Hunters Guide, by Bradford Angier
Horns in the High Country, Andy Russell

I read Hemingway when I was in junior high. Didn't much like the writing but I loved the hunting stories. Also Ruark's "Horn of the Hunter" is the best hunting book I've ever read though maybe try and gloss over the part where gin "...is a dear and trusted friend."

I didn't give a complete list of the books I have. Here are a few more.

Man Eaters of Kumaon------Jim Corbett
Last of the Ivory Hunters---John Taylor
Killers in Africa------------- Alexander Lake
My Wilderness--------------William O. Douglas
Grizzly Country------------- Andy Russell
North American Head Hunting-Grancel Fitz
No Room for Bears-----------Frank Dufresne (One of my favourite authors)

Here is the prize, but of course you will likely never find another copy.

Camp Life and the Tricks of Trapping, by W. Hamilton Gibson.

This is on an opening page,

Enetered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1881,
by W. Hamilton Gibson.
In the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington.

There are any number of methods described and illustrated, for catching every type of bird, or animal, including buffalo!

Canadian (Ontario) source. Great selection of outdoors literature.
A pleasure to deal with .. and they will hunt down hard to find titles for you!

Thanks Beretta Boy.

I ordered quite a few books frm Stackpole and Safari, but I woudl like to keep the $$ in Canada. Plus, the books and shipping was pretty expensive.

Chapters still carries hunting books you just have to search for them a little bit. If you punch in safari press or countrysport press in the search catagory there should be quite a few book there, and sometimes they are cheeper then ordering directly from either one of them.

My friend bought about 5 hard cover books from a flea market not to long ago. They are all excellent books. I read the "Whitetail Wisdom" book. Its really good, has articles by a lot of well known hunters. There was another one on big game animals that I read a bit. I read the Article on Bears by Jim Shockey. I'll find out the names and post back. I recommend all of them.
