Good hunting rifle

Thanks for all the great advice. I think I'm leaning towards a 270. I have a buddy with one and its a great accurate gun. I'm just not totally convinced that it will take down a moose cleanly. But that does give me a good excuse to add to the gun cabinet.

I shot over a dozen moose with my .270 using Federal Premium 150 grain Nosler Partitions, before I got my 30.06. No issues, good caliber and round.

My opinion;

1. Howa made, Vanguard 2 in 270, 308 or 30-06 (around $550) with a Redfield Revolution of your need (around $300, including base and rings) on it.

2. If you want something cheaper, shorter and a bit lighter (more bush hunting than field?), replace Vanguard 2 with a Marlin XS7/XL7 (around $400). Keep the scope.

Good choices. :)

I've had terrible experience with the Vortex scopes (mine was made in Japan). I sent it to get it serviced twice, it still has issues they are refusing to fix. I've given up :(

Love my .270 husqvarna. If I were u I'd go to my local gun shop and handle a few different rifles to see which fits u the best. Good luck in your search.

Got Leupold VXIII on both my 30cals and they are old. I use Nikon on everything else. I have yet to send a scope in for service unless I bought junk. Get the best glass you can. You will never regret it. A cheap 308 may still shoot adequately but cheap glass will always be just that. If it screws up in the field your hunt is toast unless you have tools and iron sights.

I went through the same questions before picking out a versatile hunting rifle. I knew I wanted a few certain attributes. I wanted a bolt action, wood stock, proven lineage and wide variety of ammo. For me that was the Remington 700 CDL. I thought about the 308, but i much prefer the ammo selection and availability of the 30-06

What are your specific issues with Vortex, and what model? My next scope will be a Vortex...
