Ive seen this a few times before! the old farts like to tell new guys : this is a fine rifle". but in actuality its a POS. They've had it since the beginning of time, and it looks like crap. " Ive taken many animals with this one.... but let me show you this other one here...."
they string the new guys along and sell off their old crap so they have more money for reloading somponents or whatever....
Dont get suckered into buying anything used frm some guy at the range.
Of course he will be a "nice guy" because he wants you to buy this old POS that is taking up space in his gun room!
HEY!!
I'm an Old guy, and I'm not like that!
I do however, have a very nice .303 Enfiled that I have killed 500 moose and 600 deer with ( before I was 30 years old)!:D

Beautiful province from my limited experience there. (Kenora and Toronto). I dont understand the .270 restriction, and the reason for it.

You should know by now not to take everything I say seriously. LOL

I believe, but not for sure that it has to do with the limit of flight the higher the .cal, but don't quote me. But then again. It's Ontario eh! Woot! :dancingbanana:
Edit to add: I now live in the bestest part of Ontario I believe, but lived in Southern Ontario for 26 years. Most of my life....and yes, it is beautiful and the hunting is a+ and people have talked about hunting right where I live now on cgn. Ontario IS beautiful, very beautiful. Don't compare Southern Ontario to North Eastern Ontario.. That is like comparing farm land to bush paradise with rolling hills and small mountains. But not to mention, Southern Ontario deer taste the best in my opinion as they feed on corn mostly. Not as wild tasting as deer up here. But moose kicks a$$, much better then beef, and much more tender and lean in my opinion.. and just well... way better all around ;)

Ok rant off... want a good bolt action rifle that is dirt cheap? that is powerful yet accurate even with open sites or peep sites out to 250-300yards?
Get yourself a sported lee enfield. The calibur is .303. ammo can still be bought for them at crappy tire and good stuff. They are cheap, if you look around you could get yourself a bubba'd .303 for 60-150 bucks depending what was done to it.
Just my 2C.... oh wait.. sh!t.. your in Ontario, doh. "long day" well, you could get it for a woohoo gun for target shooting? or for other province or parts of Ontario ? none the less, great rifles.

;)

To start, I'm going to say I have never been hunting in my life. Me and my bro want to get our license this spring and go in the fall. That being said I would like ask what rifle people would suggest for whitetail? I like the semi auto action, but bolt guns under $800 are cool too. Thanks. :dancingbanana:

...also, what is the smallest round that you can hunt deer w/ in Ontario?

Id stick to a bolt. Semi's are ok, but if you arent paying attention, you can forget she is loaded.

tons of great bolt guns here on CGN for under 800 so that's not a problem.

As for the Ontario deer question, cant help ya ..... but im sure many here can.

Good luck and have fun.

One version of the Ontario caliber restriction:

Muchas anos pasada ... (late 50's/60's) there was a flood of war-surplus Enfields, Springfields & Mausers on the market, that were cheap and readily available, together with any amount of FMJ ammo to run through them. Some army surplus stores made them available for as little as $25.00. Ammunition $2 bucks a box. All you needed was "coin" and the appearance you were over 16. The Ontario government, in it's wisdom, to prevent the use of such equipment in the more southern built-up areas, prohibited anything greater than ".275 caliber" ( which permits the .270 - cause that's the "caliber", despite the .277 groove diameter) . That pretty much "did-in" the 7mm, .30 cal, .303 Brit and 8mm Mauser military/hardball stuff from use on varmints & deer, at least in the south.

Norc M14.... SKS....:slap:
Definitely neither of the above would be my first choice as a deer rifle. They don't actually even make the list.:puke:
Sorry Flip just the way I feel...;)

SKS wouldnt be mine, but the m14 is accurate and chambered in a good caliber.

The shotgun/slug combo is the best way to go for any new hunter and gives him/her many more opportunities in hunting and sport.
The .275cal restriction is a regulation made by people who have no idea what they're talking about....or it was too much work for them to get it right . It's implied because of more residences/farm homes being closer together , and these jokers think anything under the .275(whatever that is ) is safer in these areas. Go figure ..a .270 is legal for 'yotes but a SKS(7.62x39) will get you jailtime.
As far as the 275cal limit to SW Ontario doesn't really apply to deer hunting in those zones anyway since the only firearms allowed for deer hunting is a shotgun or blackpowder and thats a controlled hunt.
WMU's that have open firearm seasons on deer can use pretty well any centerfire rifle .
