Good idea for a first handgun?

Can get a CZ 75 SP01 for 650 ish.. With thin alum grips, it's thinner than a single stack 1911.
It's a double stack, so not necessarily. I'd say it's similar size grip to Beretta 92 if that helps.
Slim for a double-stack 9mm but not what I’d call small.
The Beretta’s grip is significantly chunkier than a CZ75’s.
It’s really preference. The CZs are great but I prefer the feel of the Sigs better. Some like the lighter Glocks.
I’d go out with people who have them and try them out or go to a shop that has a few to see how they shoot or feel.

CZ75B would be a great first gun.
just know that there are 2 types:
1 is a safety lever that locks the hammer back and the other is a "D" model CZ75BD where the lever is a decocker--it drops the hammer
to half ####.
the double action is not great but single is really good--of course the gun can fire in double action mode on the first round then
transitions to single action thereafter.

Nope. A good .22; learn to shoot, it will pay great dividends as you progress into the sport, and not develop too many bad habits. I have been shooting for about 50 years; still have my first .22 pistol and rifle. The pistol (a High Standard Sportsman) I still shoot all the time, along with a High Standard Target Pistol; but I do shoot .45, .40, 9mm, .357, and Cap and Ball and I shoot them all well because of the little .22.
I would suggest that you buy a something that is a common, modern, duty gun. The reason being; it will likely be reliable, have strong aftermarket support and good availability of mags/holsters/ spare parts. As well, if you decide it is not the platform for you, you can dump it on the secondary market for %90 of your cost. Sig, Glock, CZ, FNH etc. Lots of options.
I'll be getting my RPAL soon! and i was looking at idea for a good handgun around 500-700$ range
no caliber in mind just a good first shooter
You need to ask yourself this: "What do I want this handgun to do well?"
Answering that question will narrow down both the caliber and the type of handgun. The fact that you put an arbitrary "$500.-700." cap on it suggests to me that you haven't necessarily considered the cost of ammunition.
If money is tight, you'd better make a decision on caliber first, before you try to make your handgun selection.

Go to a gun shop and handle a few to find out what fits your hand the best. While .22's are great for cheap plinking, the theory that they are good for beginners as it allows them to learn how to shoot without dealing with recoil is flawed. Start with a 9mm or greater as recoil management is critical. I have just about every main service pistol available on the market right now. I prefer my Glocks and cz's over my sigs and Beretta's
I went this route with an FN509 as a first pistol and recently went out and got a .22
Pistol shooting is oodles of fun and 9mm is great! The not-fun part is spending a few hundred bucks on centerfire pistol ammo vs 40$ for 300 rounds of .22
