Good Lord that KSG nut is tight, even with the special tool

Hello All,

I've got a brake/remington choke adapter for my KSG that I wanted to install, so I got the barrel nut removal tool.

I've read all the instructions, I've used heat, and hot damn... this thing won't loosen one bit. The videos where the guy uses an impact wrench to loosen it looks to be the way to go, but the barrel nut tool doesn't look to have a good way to interface to an impact wrench.

So, I have the KSG tools but could use a hand, and I'm wondering if any other KSG owners are out there in a similar boat or don't have the tool, etc. Would anyone want to meet up for a couple hours and we can pass the tool around? An extra pair of arms to hold the shotty while someone twists the tool (lol) would be handy as well. I'm in downtown Toronto so the local Starbucks is out (hah!) but I also am up near Barrie/Elmvale every couple weeks.

If you've got the correct KSG, it accepts a 1/2" drive tool.

When I removed my factory barrel nut, I didn't used any heat, just used a 1/2" drive impact gun and the nut came off in a second or two.
No issues at all, thanks to Shooter1of38 lending me and others the correct removal tool.

I wouldn't consider using a 1/2" ratchet or bar. Considering how tight the nut is on barrel, I'd be concerned that if the tool slipped/jumped off the barrel nut and damaged it, it would be a *itch to get it off with damaged notches, even with an impact.

Oh thank goodness. So, what your're basically saying is, I can go to any CanTire and pick up what I need to do the job (assuming it's the correct KSG).

Just to remove any chance of me being an idiot about things, might I ask you to post a picture of the 1/2" drive tool? What I've got now is the http://www.smt-tactical.com/ksg-nut-wrench

Hey blsonne,

I checked the link you provided and had a look at the wrench they offer. From what I can see you can't use an impact gun on their tool.

I used the barrel nut removal socket Keltec offer:

http://www.keltecweapons.com/ksg/ksg-accessories/ksg-barrel-ring-lug/

As you can see it is a solid, CNC machined socket which only accepts a 1/2" drive wrench/impact. Whith the SMT tool you can only use the bar provided, with perhaps an extension.

If you want to use the SMT tool, I think you will have to add some heat to assist wrenching the nut off. I know one member used the Keltec socket by adding some heat and using a 1/2" wrench, he said it was tough, but he got it off.

I think the Keltec socket is superior as you can use an impact and no heating is required. A generous CGN member on here was willing to lend out his Keltec socket to several of us and we just shipped it to each other. If you can find another member that has a Keltec socket, I'd suggest you use it with an impact. If you want to R&R the barrel nut asap you can opt to use the SMT tool with heat.

Good luck.

The kit I got, frankly, sucks. I used heat and manhandled it. It's just too easy to slip and F up the surface or your hands. What you got, that's the way to go.

Got it done! I had access to a 1/2" impact gun. So, I purchased a drive bit (didn't care what size) that would fit *just* inside of the KSG socket, then drilled through both, ran a screw through, and bolted 'em together. It's a little bubba, but it worked... about 1sec of clicks and off came the nut. Now to put some locktite on the threads and install the brake/choke adapter :)

Much thanks & respect to the folks behind the scenes who PMd suggestions and offers to help out. If I can ever return the favour, let me know.

Installed my Carlson Comp today. Quick flick of the impact and it came off. It came off easy enough that I think it would have been easily done without the use of the impact.

Gotta say though.. the Comp certainly adds to the look. Will run some slugs thru it soon to see what how much of a benefit the comp actually provides.
