Good Luck at 100 Yards

Yesterday morning luck was on my side. Usually .22LR ammo performance at 100 yards is not very consistent. I had two unusually consistent boxes of Match. And there was very little air movement. Ten consecutive 10-shot groups under 1 MOA.



The rifle was the 1907 shown below in a pic from last season.

Good shooting! It’s wonderful to have a selection of good ammo. Im now down to sk+. Lapua said Canada will start receiving new ammo in a couple months (however long it really is ). I enjoy your posts, thanks AJ

At 100 yards (and further out) the role of luck in conditions and especially ammo plays a bigger role than it does at 50. Few if any can unerringly read wind flags at 100 and if there are any warts in the ammo they won't hide.

Great shooting Glenn! You're setting a bad (=good?) example for any new shooters=proving good groups @ 100 yards with a 22LR isn't just a fairy tale. I mean, it mostly is for the majority of shooters..including the likes of 22LRGUY. (that hack doesn't even punch paper past 50 yards)

We have permanent, swinging gongs on our dedicated 22LR range @ the club. My paper targets (if I bother) are put on the 60m stand. Little groups @ 100 yards=I won't take the time or spend the $ on the ammo required but it's fun to see what is possible with the right gun and the right guy behind it!

At 100 a bit of good luck is a prerequisite. The ammo is rarely so consistent that results are always good even with lots that usually do well.

Yesterday I shot the same lot with another rifle that's done very well with it. The results were not nearly as similar. For example, one round from the first box misbehaved. It was the seventh shot of the group on the left below. This was bad luck. At 100 yards, ammo shortcomings are plain to see.



That happens when shooting at 100 so it's not extraordinary. I did have with me a different lot of Match that I had not previously tried in any rifle so I thought I'd try it next.

As I began shooting luck played a role as it became unusually calm. It would begin to rain about 20 minutes later. The two boxes performed well although the first box had an ES of 40.1 fps, the second just under 30.

While not all groups were under one inch, the overall average was satisfying.



Below, as it was yesterday, the 54.30 with a SS barrel.

The two groups at that top are more like what I am used to seeing. I took some time yesterday to lighten my trigger a bit, check the torques and verify the headspace. I have been shooting mainly Tac 22, but have picked up some Geco and some Target Rifle. They seem to head-space the same, with all three showing slight engagement with the rifling, while still being easy to chamber. I am hoping for the rain to stop, and wind remain still, so I can get out this week, and try them out.

Glenn…you are an inspiration. When I was a teenager I had a Cooey 39 with a Weaver V22 that would shoot 1” groups at 75 yards with Dominion CIL pistol match ammo.

Now I have all the best of the best of 22 sporting and match rifles with great optics and with cases of the best most coveted ammo and Im hard pressed to squeak in the occasion 1” group at 75 yards.
I don’t even dare try 100 yards. It would be so embarrassing to myself. Even the 50 yard challenge looks difficult. Im living my target shooting life vicariously through you guys. Please keep posting your targets. Thank you. Cheers !!

I've been putting targets on the 100m backers at my range for awhile now and challenging myself. No, my targets aren't as good as the ones posted here, but I don't have quite the rifle or ammo stash or time spent developing behind the trigger, and there's usually a breeze. Still, the groups are getting better and I'm keeping at it. It's good to see what's ultimately possible.
