Good Morning from Ont WMU 46

Quiet again today... Yesterday I was out at 0530 in the dark watching the bait. I felt a presence near me. I looked to my right and the bear was on the other side of a rock about 15' away looking at me. Scared the hell out of me. If I did not empty my bladder when I showed up, I would have wet myself. I jumped and so did Smokey. He ran off towards the bait. I did not have a clear shot. This deer hunt has turned in to a bear hunt. My friend and I had a visit from a Conservation Officer this morning. He checked our licenses and weapons. I showed him the pics of the bear and he agrees it is a big guy. It ate 80 lbs of food last night after we left. I really want this bear.

Personally, I would find the experience of hunting to be somewhat ruined if I could get emails and surf the net while on stand...and I would never post from there...but I sure as hell enjoy reading this thread! :) I'm glad you're more of a new-age man than I am...but, then, most people are. :)

I want you to get this bear!

Its weird to have a high speed connection out here. This is the first year for it. I understand with what your saying. I am alternating between watching, reading a book, and surfing on my phone. I am glad a few people like this thread and have thanked me for "bringing them along" As always a day in the bush is better then a day at work. You feel like a man with a weapon in your hands and out in the woods looking for meat. I saw a young bald eagle today over Georgian Bay. That's the first one I have seen in Ontario, outside of a zoo. So far this has been a excellent trip.

Good stuff. Thanks for the updates and hopefully you get a deer and/or bear. Didn't think Britt had many deer. I figure the area is very rocky the closer you get to Georgian Bay and hence less deer. I've shot them in 47 out near Port Loring way back in my youth. Like others have said, I enjoy your updates. Makes me wish I was there instead of here at work. Do you butcher the deer (or bear) yourself or is there someone in Britt or Byng Inlet that does them for a good price?

There can be lots of deer on the shore. This year has been quiet. Last year we were up to our eyes in them. We butcher them in the field. I use a army ground sheet to pack the meat out of the brush. We have a food grade barrel to put the meat in to. We stop at a store and buy bags of ice for the trip back south. This bear is really messing with the deer. We need to get him and maybe the deer will make an appearance. We saw a big moose after lunch.

The bear snuck up on me again. was behind me and ran when I turned around. It is absolutely scary how quiet they are. It was about 10" away from me when I turned. I had another adrenaline dump in 24 hours. Why the hell can't we carry a pistol hunting? My Ruger Security Six loaded with .357 would be perfect for close encounters. That's 2 times he has got the drop on me. It is almost like I need to be in a all around defence with this bear.

Since you went out and bought a bear license you might not want to consider this, but why not remove the bait? It seems to me that the bait is keeping the bear hanging around and probably causing the deer to give your watch a wide berth. If it's a good spot you might get a shot at a deer without bait but maybe less likely while there's a bear hanging around. :)

I have thought about this too. We are not seeing any signs of deer anywhere. We may try removing it tomorrow and see if it changes things.

I shot at the bear 30 mins ago, and missed! I did not adjust my sights for elevation. I saw the round impact a tree under its chest. It took off like an Olympic sprinter. What a bloody stupid mistake. The rear sight is now set for 100M. I will let things cool off for a while and restock the bait with another bag of feed after I have lunch. I have 3 more cartons of molasses to use. No deer signs at all. My friend has moved in to a few different areas and has nothing to show for it. If I don't get this bear, we will have fed him about 200 lbs of feed, a bushels worth of apples, and a gallon of molasses. This is shaping up to be quite an educational week for me.

Bears eat alot and deer will not really approach the bait if yjere is a bear around. My advice put up a stand and turn this into a bear hunt because that bear will smartin up and feed at night or switch spots because deer will not show up.

I agree. I switched to the bear 2 days ago. I will shoot a buck if I see one, but I don't think I will see any. My friend has moved to a closer position and is watching for the bear and deer. A tree stand is not a option, due to the angles. I have set up my shelter half as a blind, and I am now about 50M away from the bait. Just across the marsh. The wind is in my face, so I have that going for me.

This is the last day for us. The rest of the feed, apples, and molasses were put out last night. So we will hope for the best. On a brighter note a friend got a deer on my property for the controlled hunt. He says there is a lot of activity there. So there is still a chance we can get some deer with shotguns in Dec. I can't put up more pics because my phone is full. We will be observing Remembrance Day at 1100.

So ends my week. No deer or bears were harmed. Smokey was a no show today. It was quite a week, and I learned a lot more about black bears. We had a good time out there, and the weather was good for the most part. All of my new clothing and gear I bought worked out really well. Thanks to everyone who wished me luck and enjoyed the updates and photos. I will put more up when I get home. We will be going after bucks in the controlled hunt in December.
