I had heard from others here that there was still the odd Canadian Tire store around that has a "gunshop" in it...today I visited the one in Red Deer, Alta. :)

Wow, I couldn't believe my eyes...a big rack of rifles and shotguns, shelves packed with a decent supply and variety of rifle, shotgun & handgun ammunition. ;)

The gentleman working there was quite knowledgeable about guns and very comfortable to talk to...what a treat that was! He explained to me that this was one of five in the Country that he knew of that still stocked firearms. Apparently the same family owns this store and one in Calgary, and are holdouts against the Politically Correct crowd who frown on such inventories.

I plan on moving to Red Deer from Edmonton in the coming year, and this discovery made me think that it's "my kind of town".

I thanked him on behalf of us all... Jeff/1911.

handgun ammo in CT , .... i dream of stuff like this too bad i have been coerced to live in areas that embrace oppression

Here in the GTA at my store they stopped carrying even pistol CASES or cleaning supplies. They do not stock anything other then BASIC ammo and trigger locks. Its sad.

I've been in the Calgary store a couple of times. Their selection went from OK before the renos to seriously nice after.
If south Calgary and Red Deer are two of the non-PC CT's, where are the other three?

there's no such thing as 'HANDGUN AMMO"- ammo is ammo, and i DEFY you to find a HANDGUN CARTRIDGE that isn't chambered in a"long gun , CARBINE OR SMG- it's up to the FRANCHISE, and they should SELL WHAT MOVES, not what they feel like or what they THINK is"handgun ammo"- all that being said, it's ct/walmart"s LACK OF SCOPE that keeps the local gun shop in business- if it wasn't the only thing that would keep the local gunshop in business would be repairs, reloading components, and oddball calibers that the "big box' wouldn't carry

I know a CT in Belville ON sells guns and a big one in Kingston was setting up for it. they had the gunrack ready last I been there in Feb.

We're getting a Wholesale Sports in the lower mainland that will bring some cheaper 'store bought' ammo here.

I like supporting the local shops but sometimes a few extra dollars saved here and there helps. Got kids (and guns) to feed!

I can think of a few cartridges that have not been used in long guns AFAIK:

-.25 ACP
-.455 Webley
-.41 Long Colt
-.41 rimfire (for Derringers; not .41 Swiss Vetterli)
-7.62 Nagant

That said, I agree that stores should base their choices on what to stock based on what they think they can sell, not political correctness.

Independent gunshops won't be supplanted by big box stores if they can offer something that the big boxes can't or won't supply.

All Canadian Tire stores in Alberta (AFAIK) stock ammunition, but most don't stock firearms. The CT on MacLeod Trail is an okay place to shop if you're not looking for anything too exotic. I seem to recall the one in Lethbridge stocked guns too.

Many many moons ago, the north store used to carry firearms. Mostly 22's and 12 gauge shotguns. I bought a single shot 12 gauge from them. After the renos.... no guns, just ammo. The south store never had firearms.

Was in the Kenora store in the late spring of 07. Only stopped for the store specifically. Wasn't a "gun store" as I would know to call it, but it wasn't half bad. Had a few "higher end" accurate bolt guns on the rack.

The Red Deer store will bring it "requests" for firearms. As long as their distributor has it or can get it. Didn't get to talk to the sporting goods department manager but a younger fella working there said he was a gun guy.

Are you kidding? There are hundreds probably. I can think of several dozen off the top of my head.

and the boys in cadiz, spain have probably made a destroyer carbine in each caliber- or the shops in indonesia- i know there's one in mosin-nagant-revolver -i've seen it- looks like a big bore cooey-and it's single shot
