Good optic/sight for an SHTF SKS.

I have a modded SKS with a Choate rail mounted to the receiver. This is my SHTF rifle. Right now I have a reflex sight on it but was wondering if there are any other, better options out there.

I also have a choate style mount on an SKS, but IMO for a SHTF rifle you are better off with the iron sights.
-first off, it's not a long distance tack driver, second for a SHTF you don't want a delicate optic, or a red dot needing batteries. KISS is the way to go.
My opinion only, and I love SKS's in every form

Good suggestions. I looked at the tech sights, and while they seem like a good option I am not sure if they are the best for an SHTF gun. They will replace the receiver cover retaining pin which means that I will need another tool to disassemble the rifle in the field. They will also be removed with when I will have to inevitably clean the rifle, losing the zero. So that makes the rifle more complex to disassemble and will require me to waste ammo to zero it back in after cleaning. Not good in an SHTF scenario.

The Choate mount lets me use the stock sights as well as an optic which gives me a primary sight and a backup.

What would be a good durable optical sight for an SHTF scenario, preferably one that requires no batteries and is as open with good FOV as a reflex sight?

Iron sights only

Every SKS scope mount is a utter POS unless you drill and tap the receiver. Tech sights are good but prevent you from easily field stripping your gun which is something you would need to do in a SHTF gun.

Has anyone else here tried Mojo Sights?

I found these not too long ago on the Web @ mojosights.com. 'merican company but I couldn't find an equivalent in Canada.

I replaced my originals on a 91/30 with Mojo sights and found them to be better in several aspects. First off, as someone mentioned earlier, they're not battery operated so will work for SHTF! Second, target acquisition was vastly improved over the original v-notched rear tangent sight and front blade. Also, it's a fast install on the existing hardware which can be traded back to the original anytime. They have them for sks as well, I just haven't seen them mentioned here b4.

My two cents...

A dab of neon orange paint on the tip of the front sight post is all you need in a SHTF situation...

..optics on an SKS for the purpose outlined are pointless, and a hindrance.

Modding the SKS for recreational purposes and ergonomics is fine, but for prepping, you want it bone stock.

I have florescent greenish glow in the dark night sight paint on them and it works great.

I already have the stock iron sights and I can use them, as backup. I have a choate scope mount that allows me to mount an optic AND still use my iron sights, without hindrance, as backup. I have already taken care of that part and my iron sights, which are proven in battle and great for an SHTF scenario, are available for use. What I would like to know is what the best optic will be, as an addition to the iron sights.

Once the optic fails then I can use the iron sights, but i'd like to have both. Thanks.

I agree with what everyone is saying. I tact'd out my first Sks. Didn't like it that way. Sold it. Bought three more and left them pretty much stock. But if you really want an optic I'd put a bushnell trs-25 red dot. It's a good red dot for a good price. I run one on my cz858. It lower 1/3 cowitnesses. That's my SHTF rifle.

I don't think you understand SHTF, or why a stock SKS is such an awesome prepper's firearm...

Mounts, optics, stocks, etc; change the weight, dimensions, balance, and portability of the rifle (on this platform, these options serve to improve basic ergonomic and recreational requirements, nothing more). The SKS by design is simple and rugged, it gives you in its stock form all you could ask of a survival rifle (simplicity, self contained cleaning system, reliability, effective widely available cartridge, multi-use contained bayonet).

You also must be aware this is an intermediate range firearm. Mounting optics is not a substitute for apt proficiency with the firearm over iron sights. If you can not effectively use the stock rifle out to 200 yards on a man or game size target, an optic is the last thing you should be worrying about.

In a real SHTF scenario, if you give an optic a chance to fail, just once, it could mean the difference between life and death.

...Ah! Ok. I would then suggest a buddy with a good pair of binoculars (wide plane of view) as a spotter!?:stirthepot2: This way your optics won't fail and will never lose zero...if he's a good buddy, your optics might even clean the gun after use. Let's see a red dot do that! Laugh2
