Hey, first gun, never had optics either. Wondering what is good for optics? Read the Optics terms sticky and he said that 3x9 would be fine for deer although other threads I read say that it can be not enough range. I think 3x9 would be fine for me. The problem with looking at optics for me is that there are so many products from each company that I have no clue what is good or bad. I was leaning towards Bushnell for their affordability.

If 500$ is enough for a solid pair of scopes and rings, what can you recommend?

In your price range the absolute best scope for your money and needs is a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40.

There are better for more and worse for less but bang for buck it can't really be beat.MANY others will agree.

I did alot of researching since your post and found that people like Zeiss more than Leupold and Bushnell but I also noticed that they compared the Conquest with the Sightron and half the people swore on Zeiss while the other half swore on Sightron. I looked online to see which is cheaper and found a Sightron Big Sky for $335 shipped which is hundreds less than any deal I could find so I am going to go with that. I hope that it's a good choice.

Nothing wrong with Sightron, I have purchased 3 in the last couple years and will be getting more.

You won't be disappointed.

Redfield. You can't beat the price and they come with the leopold warranty. Great choice for your first (or second, or third) gun.

Vortex would be my opinion for the one to go with. You can finish a 6.5x20x44 for about $400 and that leaves ya with $100 for a set up rings.
Vortex has the best warranty in the biz and has superior glass to redfield. Can't say about a Ziess as I've never owned one.
